erm hi this is the first time i've ever posted a new topic so bare with me

i had an idea the other day, i was sittin around with my friend and having a beer, i left my swiss army at home so i didn't have a bottle opener, we both had our spidies tho, i have a harpy he has a police. so we were thinking about how to open a bottle with one, i dunno what all the knife bits are called but we were thinking that u could use the little notch at the bottom of the blade when its closed to get the cap off. didn't quite fit tho but if u can put a little groove in it it might. i know its a knife not a bottle opener but it could be useful...

Hmmmmmmm. Very interesting. I wonder if there's any good reason in terms of design and function that it couldn't be done.

I have used the base of the spine of my Native before. That seems to work well, although it does require twisting the knife a fair bit which could be hard on the pivot, I suppose.

Hi Ruxton. elcome to the forum and thanx for the post. We have had a number of ELUs request a cap puller in a knife. One guy actually built one into the handle of his Delica...very nice job I might add. I don't think that I would use part the lock mechanism, for safety reasons. But, you do bring up an interesting topic.

So......let's talk about it. Who would want a cap opener built somewhere into the handle (or blade) of a closed knife and where would you put it?

Quick questions... who is sal? do u work for/represent spyderco? and what is an ELU? as i said i'm new to the forum. i had another go i couldn't quite do it with my harpy and i don't wanna risk damaging my other knife (a CF civilian <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>) but on the SS models i wouldn't think it could damage the knife, the only reason i mention it is that it is practically the right shape for it as it is. a special bit of the handle specifically designed to open bottles might detract from the overall looks of the knife, a tiny groove on a bit that no one can see when its open on the other hand would be unobtrusive and (to me neway) v. useful.

Wow, i'm lost for words, i had no idea you were the CEO, thank you for taking the time to post a reply, i'm a big spyderco fan. Earlier this year i went on holiday to America and bought a CF civilian, not many people in the UK have them i'll bet, your knives are of a quality that far surpasses all other brands and makes, thank you again.

Sal, would it be possible to build some sort of opener into the clip? Then maybe offer these opener clips as accessories?

how about a cap lifter near the base of the blade on the bottom like in the old "trick knives". I have used the one on my grandpa's old knife to open a bottle and it worked perfectly. The only thing that may be a problem is how it would affect the integrity and strength of the blade.

Hehheh. :-) I've been using my daily carry to open Coronas for years... What's always puzzled me is why does the weak little aluminum cap scar the stainless steel of the casing. I guess it’s all just a forcearea problem.

I say leave the spydies as they are- beautiful and unmarred separation devices. Unless you’re making a model called the 'bar wench'. If you want a Swiss, buy a Swiss.

Hi Ruxton, thanx for the kind words. I get here as often as I can, not as often as I'd like.

What would be best I think is some type of accessory that can be fastened to any model. The actual part that does the opening is only 1/4" consisting of a hook & lever.

What if it was attached via the lanyard hole?

nice ideas, the clip could be modified so that it was bent over to have a kink in the middle fairly easily, i was thinking that you could screw in an attatchment in the lanyard hole to pivot out, i think there is something like that on a leatherman, the flair i think, the gold bit which swings out.
all i'm saying is it could be done but to be honest i wouldn't want one on my knife. it would destroy the overall look of the knife, the only reason i suggested is that its the right shape already.

I saw this over on bladeforums...

Just use a bowie to open the bottle.

-start just above the label and slide up, real fast.
-the spine of the blade will connect with the lip of the bottle, actually blowing the cap off.

just don't try to drink from it after... ahh, blood... how am I gonna stick a bandaid on my lips?

there's pics in bladeforums from the guy who did this one... back in april or may I think...
