Notch at the base of ZDP Caly Jr. blade?

Is this normal? Both of mine have it. I was beginning to think that I had factory seconds, but pics posted here by others have it also.

I doubt there were any factory seconds on the ZDP Caly.

Is the notch on the spine of the blade, near the base of the blade? There's usually a triangular notch there on factory seconds. If it's near the choil, that's normal I believe.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

They are near the choil, not on the spine. I had myself worried for a bit there

It's called a "Spanish notch". There are multiple theories as to the original reason for it, but it does serve a useful purpose by making it easier to sharpen the entire blade using a flat stone. Some folk, including me, think it neatens up the ususally slightly rough transiton between the ground portion of the blade and the tang. The Kiwi is another model which features one, as are all three of the Jess Horns.

Well now that we cleared that up, I must say Axlis that is a great photo for showing the lamination line.

I think The Daecon is right on here. I have talked with guys that grind a notch like that at the back of the blade to make it easier to sharpen the blade. It does well for that. The new D'Allara also has it.
