Is it just me, or does it seem like we ask asking for two different knives?

One camp wants a "tactical" Caly III. A literal translation of the UKPK, with low ride clip, lockback, and the high grip scale material of your choice: G10, canvas Micarta, or peel-ply CF.

The other camp want the dress Caly III. Double linered, front bolstered, with a fancy scale material and a nice clip.

And some want both. :D

Maybe a longer range view is needed, with several sprints planned for release over a period of years. It would probably oversaturate the market to release too many Caly III variants too close together - even if it is just one fancy VG-10, one ZDP, and one FRN VG-10.

The new Caly3 "lock-back pattern" will be tested with a fairly plain scale. Either micarta, CF, or ? (not stainless).

We also have a design for a bolstered model with an exotic handle. If the Caly3 pattern proves itself in the marketplace, then we'd probably do "sprints" of the bolstered version, like we do with the Kopa.

Drawing from my other collection hobby, flashlights, how about a mil-spec Hard Anodized type III (HAIII) aluminum, with SureFire style knurling on the scales, heck, maybe you could do a joint venture with SureFire and have a Spyderco/SureFire combo pack, perhaps with a SF E1e or E2e Executive flashlight with the Spyderco "Bug" on it....

As much as I love peel ply CF, the price point might be contrary to the initial test. G10 would be the safe, wide appeal affordable choice IMO.

Sal, this sounds like a great idea. From my impressions, the direction it seemed like the Caly3 was going it was basically going to simply be a larger kopa. I am glad this is not going to be the case. This seems like it is going to be made in Japan--will it have full screw construction like the UKPK?

Just in case I didn't mention it earlier, I LOVE Stag. Can't think of a classier combo than micarta scales with stag inset.

Count me in that "camp" too!

I have UKPK (with "design team" inscription ;) ) - superb little knife!

The SAME knife with lockback would be wonderful, nearly perfect. :)

G10 is just fine, although I would prefer some other color, maybe dark blue or green...

From a functional stand point, I prefer G-10, but Carbon Fiber sure is pretty.

I've been holding out to post. I am really excited about the whole thing, especially if there is a 63mm version. I really can't decide on what I want, but I love that translucent g-10 stuff posted. I'd be okay with black micarta, any colored micarta is better though.

Have any of you ever seen cow horn scales? They are actually one of the most appealing scales I've come across. I don't know how durable they are, as with all natural/horn handle materials, but they have a wonderful depth and color blend. Cow horn might be a fairly cheap, yet still handsome alternative to more expensive materials...

See the white micarta Calypso Jr.!! That knife is sweet. The contouring of the handle would probably be too much $, but it looks very comfy.

Don't know if anyone's hit on this or not(sorry for the dupe if so!), but what about colored woven CF? There are several handgun gripmakers who specialize in using blue/grey, blue/black CF in their grips. I think it would be neato cheetos to see such a thing in a Spyderco handle. Maybe burnt orange/black or red/black weaves, or any other combination you can think of? The possibilities in handle materials seem to be quite endless these days, so I look forward to seeing what surprises the Spydercrew has in store for us!
