Future of the Calypso Jr.

#1

Post by Axlis »

There is a thread running on BF where Sal asked for some thoughts on the next Caly Jr. So what does everyone here think? I put in my vote for a release of the G-10 handled locking UK penknife style. Forgot to add that I would prefer "tip down" with this model. It just seems to make it ride lower in the pocket.

G10 or steel and bone put one thing it must have in tip up and down.Being tip down is the main reason I haven't got one now.

Not a fan of G10 and prefer the blade shape of the Calypso Jr. I suggested stainless bolsters, wood scales, a damasteel blade, and no clip. Would like to see the ramp and choil jimped like the UKPK, the spine left full width, and the Boye dent eliminated.

I just like the Caly Jr., period. I'd probably buy any configuration and variation they put out.

Isn't it great how there's always a thread or two on the Calypso Jr. on the front page of this forum! I don't think love for this knife is going away for a while!

Don't you still have the tooling for a metal handled calypso jr?
Just upgrade the steel to zdp-189, and either add some cutouts or traction grooves to improve the grippy-ness in wet weather.

I carried a steel handled worker for over 10 years, but the calypso's edge-to-edge flat grind blows away the saber grind (flat or hollow ground).

-----------------------OR-----------------------

Just make the Delica edge-to-edge flat grind.

I think that while the fish-scale pattern is a very efficient pattern, it DID initially turn me off ... that is until I held it & used it - great grippy-ness.

I can see why novices would choose the delica, just for the look & feel of the volcano grip of the delica & merlin.

I, too, love the blade on the Caly, Jr. Have no preference tip up or down. I'd pick up at least one no matter the final decision.

I've been pushing for bolsters and fancy scales but there doesn't seem to a lot of support for that :( . If a simpler knife would be better received I would much prefer micarta scales like the original Calypso rather than G10. However, I would also like the blade shape of the UK Penknife, i.e no swedge and a rounded cusp on the thumb ramp.

I have no interest in seeing the Calypso Jr. in G-10

How about a rich brown micarta for the handle and a wire clip setup for 4 way carry.

A Caly jr. II, that's interesting...
First, the blade. Keep it the same shape, maybe with a bit of belly. Add some fine traction grooves on the thumbrest if you like, but not necessarily. Make the kick longer. Please, do not enlarge the hole! Latest Spyderco knives already are broad like a soup spoon and I don't feel the need for another one.
Handles: CF (or G10 eventually), WITHOUT metal liners.
Regular front lock, WITHOUT the Boye dent.
Wireclip a la UKPK.

sign me for one ;)

Well, since the Calypso Jr is one of the classics I don't own or haven't handled yet, I ordered one( a FRN handled one) despite my budget. I hear so much raving about it, that I want to try one out. Just one question: Is the clip really that bad?

I would very much like a G10 CJ in serrated H1 steel, adjustable pivot and a sturdy clip.

I would be thrilled with a US Penknife. Caly jr with lock-back, wire clip and ZDP189 or S30V. A fancy, bolstered knife would be very cool too, or a Caly jr sized Kopa. Yumm.

Not sure what you're thinking is "bad" about the clip. The hole which allows it to clear the blade pivot does weaken it somewhat, how likely that is to cause breakage is probably more a result of the thickness of you pants than anything else. How a person draws and fastens the knife to their pocket could also be a factor, have a hunch some folks move it considerably further out from the handle when performing these maneuvers than others.

The condition is not unique to the FRN Calypso Jr. several other models share that style clip.
