6/2 Urban

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... p?t=477695
Sal Glesser wrote:Thanx for the plug Soupah. Unfortunately the "Pride" is no longer being produced.

The original concept was to make a "legal anywhere" folder that could be sold in airports worldwide. Like the spoons.

We designed the model, tooled up, made many country flags and while the first production run was in process, 9/11 happened and knife bans on planes followed. The project was scrapped.

We do have a new version called the "Urban" scheduled for later this year. It is slightly smaller than the UKPK (which is legal in most countries) with plans for variety of handle color and material as well as 4 blade shapes. It is a one hand open, slip-joint (notch-joint) folder with a 2.6" blade.

The Urban was designed and is being produced to serve that "legal anywhere" (no schools or federal bldgs) need, which many of us that travel, have.

Apologies for my shameless plug :o

Sorry, no pics yet. the protos are still too far removed from the finished piece.

Hi Emre,

regarding the safety issue. It's pretty hard to cut yourself that way if you hold the knife as it was designed to be held. We employ a large finger choil between the handle and the blade. The index finger is placed in the finger choil. If the blade begins to close, your index finger stops blade motion before in can cut you. We also have a half way stop in the open/close rotation. We're very safety concious.

There are many places in the world, such as the UK, where locking blades are not legal to carry. We developed the UK pen knife with the British Blade forumites for safe, legal hi-performance carry in the UK.

But the UKPK seems to still be a tad long (3") and the black color (soon to be changed) is still intimidating. This information was the result of many Brits carrying and using the knife in the UK.

It's interesting to note that the Brits said they weren't as enamored with the UK flag as "we Americans". We found that true elswhere as well. Perhaps, a bad marketing call on my part in the original plan to use country flags :o

So we developed the "Urban". A little smaller, no black. 2.6" is a good working size. We can easily grind it down if needed, but easier, (and cheaper) to work with makers like MSCantrell or STR and grind off .1 of a blade (from the spine). The large majority of our customer base worldwide is not limited to 2.5", and I doubt they'd lock you up for the .1 ". You also have a choice of blade shapes, so a less intimidating blade shape can be selected.

The "Urban" was developed as a result of working with the "Pride" and the "UKPK". It is the next "refinement" in the genre.

The scales will be FRN formed with texture like the E4/D4. Haven't decided on a color yet. The sheath will also be FRN and will match the scale color.

G-10 significantly increases the price, and we're trying to keep it reasobable for the troops. If needed, perhaps for extreme environments, we could make G-10 variations.

The model was disco'd for lack of a good maker. We had planned to make it in Golden, but we're pretty busy right now.

I will be speaking to a maker with the capability and capacity shortly.
While we're on the subect:

6AL4V Titanium
G-10 (color?)
Carbon Fiber
Aluminum
Stainless Steel
FRN (3D or flat)
Other

Please let me know first and second choice.

There will be an 83mm version of both and the Samaraitan (Vallotin / Diskin design) and the Citadel.

Probably the fall for the 83mm Citadel and early next year for the 83mm Samaritan.

We are planning export of the models.

There is also an 80mm "not named yet" model that Eric designed.

C112P&S Micro Dyad present and future:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... ost4767779
Actually we worked quite a bit on trying to make is as thin and light as possible as it will be carried without a clip. Quite a bit of design refinement and mfg refinement required to built it. Even the skeletonized scales were a challenge.

Sorry to those not pleased, we do our best.

It's a new knife with all new problems. It's also a very small knife so the makers haved to put on their "tiny hands" just to build them.

We'll be building 1500 total through out the year. Next years model will have Black Mother of pearl scales. Again 1500 only.

Should be legal just about anywhere (even New York), may UK? No airplanes or schools. NKP friendly (Non-Knife-People).

We thought of it as an elegant small knife solution with dual locking blades, natural scales and first class blade steel. I guess we'll "hide-'n-watch" reaction.

Regarding the design and origins of the Native:
A company came to us in the mid 90's and asked us to design a knife that would appeal to the Wal-Mart customer. They offered to build and inventory the large amounts needed to be able to work with Wal-Mart.

I spent a fair amount of time in Wal-mart watching customers of knives and speaking with them as to their preferences. The Native design was the result of that investigation.

We have so many variations now of the Endura and Delica that adding more is dificult. OTOH, we'd hate to limit a model to a Sprint if it has large market appeal. I think the higher cost will limit sales.

sal wrote:When we introduced the version, it was considered an "upgrade". The market didn't want any part of it no matter how we made it (full flat, saber, liners, no liners, etc).

We have a P2 designed. The maker didn't want to use the ball bearing lock so it will have a mid-back-lock. Once (if?) the design is refined a bit and the "real world" accepts it, we'll play with other locks.

...and (Personal note: Hope Endura is one of the contenders for the lock)

The ball lock with the cage (like the P'kal) is one we're developing for the Golden factory. We're currently considering which models would benefit from the lock change.

Urban 8/29/07
http://www.britishblades.com/forums/sho ... ight=Urban
Thanx Col,

Hope you enjoy.

The "Urban" is a 2.5" blade version of the UK. Seems these British blokes said the UK was too big and tactical (black)......after all that work

So we are making the "Urban" to please. smaller, scales will be: Foliage Green G-10, bright orange G-10 (another demand from the Brits), then we'll work on a bolstered version and an FRN version.

4 different blades, all mix 'n match.

Colin has the first prototype.

From bladeforums regarding the Military "2".
Sal Glesser wrote:We will no doubt drilll a bazillion holes in it and make it a 4 way clip.

We will probably use a different lock on the "2" model, not sure which one. Between a Compression-Lock, Ball bearing / Cage, or the new "Stop-Lock".

If we use larger liners, they will be nested and drilled. We wouldn't want to maker it any heavier. The size / weight ratio is a main feature of the design.

We will probably run the "2" along side of the original for a while.

We're open to any suggestions.
