Exciting! Is this going to be a lightweight or G10 UKPK?

... and from the 9Cr18Mov thread in the Byrd forum ...Joshcrutchley1 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 5:23 pmPosting here since the Bryd forum doesn't get the same traffic. This is a reply in the "Byrd with high end steel" thread.
This all could spell good news for the budget line, either for Byrd or Spyderco knives like the Tenacious. A lot has changed in the last decade. More Chinese companies have been using 9Cr18Mov. WE in particular has perfected the heat treatment for 9Cr18Mov. The performance jump from 8Cr13Mov to current middle-of-the-road 9Cr18Mov is notable. The performance jump to Civivi or Sencut knives using WE's 9Cr18Mov is significant. It is an excellent stainless alternative to Chinese D2.
In 2021, knives in 8Cr13Mov don't even register with me for consideration. It doesn't matter if they have a cool design. I instantly pass them over. Upgrading to 9Cr18Mov without a big jump in price would instantly put a whole bunch of budget Spyderco models on the table for me.
Re: Sal's Casual Bombshell Thread
Agreed. I think that considering the Chinese made models role as introductory pieces to many folks plus the competitions steel and value, using a better steel than 8Cr would really help new buyers to get a better sense of Spydercos theme of edge performance. I've used a Civivi baklash which has a 9Cr blade with thin blade stock, thin BTE, and hollow ground, and it's really something for it's price. Upgrading to 9Cr without significantly raising prices could put the tenacious back on the list of the most recommendable and best value budget knives.chronovore wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 1:52 pm

SSSssssooooo. What model did you have in mind? It might be possible for me to grab a blade or two before the Robot gets them...............................and how many of you would be interested in such custom piece?

Sal about perhaps making available a few blades without a sharpened (secondary) bevel, so no factory edge, just primary bevel

From the thread on non-stainless Spydercos:
That means they made a high-hollow K390 Delica as a test. Man, I want that knife!
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

We've actually made a lot of models that were birthed on this forum and we've got a few of those going on right now eg: Hi-performance Delica, Ayoob and Damascus Urban.

In my opinion, the Sage in FRN is a good platform/pattern for variety. That's why we made it. I'm currently testing a Sage 5 FRN in REX 121.

Sal bombshelled that one awhile back. That's the reason I've been waiting to buy a Sage 5 LW

Re: Sal's Casual Bombshell Thread
A rex 121 Spyderco folder that you could actually buy is a big deal. Obviously, no torque on the blade but as an EDC for just slicing that is cool. You could probably go a year or two between sharpening with light use. I would be tempted. With the advent of flexible ceramic that can’t rust and can cut twice as much as 121, that would be my only other ideal pocket knife.

Re: Sal's Casual Bombshell Thread
There was confusion about this before and Sal clarified that a Rex 121 Sage LW is not slated for production.

That's right I forgot about that part

Good to know Golden has bumped up the minimum number of Mules for future releases. Thanks Sal!

sal wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 7:09 pmIt's a little more complicated than frying an egg. Once the steel come in, we have to begin our "lab testing". Grinding, heat treat, sharpening, etc to determine optimal performance. We use "mules" much like Shawn's "coupons" and we go through the testing. Once it is determined where we want to get to, we'll begin a run of "Mule Teams" making at least 1500 pieces.

The LT3 is a surprisingly wonderful knife. Like a beefy, baby Caribbean. It is super stout, easy to manipulate and has great ergonomics.u.w. wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 8:26 am

Highly underrated, likely because it was so expensive until it was disco'd.
