Nylon or stainless steel handles?

#1

Post by CraigC »

I love my lightweight Dragonfly, but what do you folks prefer, Zytel (FRN )or stainless steel handles? For the smaller knives like the Dragonfly, Cricket, etc. Which is classier?

I'm looking for robustness and a high sheeple-friendly factor.

sheeple seem to like non-black knives better for some reason.

SS handles are quite classy, but some of us just plain don't like them. I myself prefer FRN, and haven't had to worry about it holding up yet.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

I started off with a spyderedge SS Dragonfly, which got lots of negative response from sheeple. I think it might have been the teeth, however. When I "upgraded" to an FRN plainedge, I got much less negative press from the masses. However, I have since decided I prefer serrated edges, and have gone back to an FRN spyderedge, and now I get weird looks again.

My point? I think people might be more alarmed by the style and shape of the blade than by size and color (although, those may be factors, too.)

My advice, go with the lightweight Dragonfly of your choice, and just HANDLE it in a non-flashy non-threatening way. Presentation is everything.

i like the wieght and feel of ss. i think that vampyre wolf is right about sheeple and ss but the sarrations are a big factor like michael g73 said. have you looked at the bob lum chinese folder it is extreamly elagant in green ( now about 800 in blue for a limited time) and it really cuts like a true champ.

Serrations don't seem to bother my crowds much. My crowds seem bothered more by size and color.

I whip out the cricket, and don't get as many looks as with the ladybug.

Welcome to the forum, CraigC. Good first post!

I would guess that the majority of people would perceive the SS handles to be stouter than the FRN. I think there is at least a slight inborn mistrust of plastic that could come into play also.

Those who have been around Zytel/FRN for considerable time recognize just how indestructible it is. Many of those come to appreciate the light weight associated with such handles.

Ultimately, all such questions get down to subjective feelings and preferences. A good many knife knuts expect a solid grip on their knives, and are leary of a handle which feels slick in its natural state. Many jobs for which knives are used add one or another liquid or slimy substance into the situation. Already slick metal handles can become almost impossible to control, and a considerable risk of injury ensues.

Personally, I like Zytel/FRN. I don't like slick/slippery handles. But, when it comes to sheeple, I frankly live a pretty reclusive life, and few folks have much opportunity to observe my knives. However, twice in the recent past, I managed to forget to place my neck knife under my shirt before heading out to a store and/or the bank. Think I even went into the post office that way. I don't recall anyone giving me particularly odd looks. Then again, I may always be receiving them, and simply don't recognize them for what they're worth. Also, my wife and children have told me that I look mean. People may simply be leary of commenting to a mean-looking guy. Long way around to say can't help in that area.

Hope you stay around and enjoy the company.

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm asking about sheeple because my wife really wants to travel. By air. Yup, now the problem comes into focus.

By "sheeple" I guess I really mean the idiots most commonly found in airports but who exist everywhere.

I'm not about to go anywhere knifeless, so I have to go underground, so to speak. I'm learning to be quiet and understated about what I carry and how I deploy it.

Time was, you were admired for being prepared enough to whip out a pocketknife when the need arose. Now you can get arrested. Silly-*** sheeple, silly-*** laws. Sigh.

I chose to go with the more grip-friendly FRN and ordered a plain-edge Cricket today. Thanks for your posts.

Craig-

I have both an FRN Dragonfly and FRN Cricket (serrated and plain, respectively) and have found both to be quite "acceptable" to the masses. I think either- considering their small size- should work well for your needs.

Congrats on the Cricket purchase- its a great little knife (the only one I have my wife keeps trying to steal).

if you have to get the spydercard for your walet, i always put my walet on the tray with change so it don'st beep or any thing. if you have to put your knife on a key chain it looks less knife like at an airport and i still think you should be admired for being prepared.

i have carried a SAK since i was about 12 or 13 and once an airport sercity person said somthng and i replied "if i could hi-jack the plane with just this do you think i would even need it?
