25th Anniversary Knife
G'day Sal,
I'm not trying to cause trouble again , but I thought this knife deserved it's own thread. Have you had any further thoughts on the 25th Anniversary knife? Damascus or damasteel, scale materials etc.? Is it definitely going to be based on the Delica? Inquiring minds need to know . Actually I just need to know what it is I'm saving up for .
Take care,
Clay
Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow, in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Blades,
You'd better believe I am too. I'm just hoping that they're a bit spread out. I've got a couple of things to sell in the meantime (not including the kids ) so I hope I'll be able to afford both.

Okay Clay, and would-be troublemakers, it sounds to me like its time to make suggestions again.
Since our fancy damascus/damasteel idea has apparently proved to be too expensive, and Sal wants something "neat," how about a Endura II with a magnesium (or titanium) handle, and an upgraded blade steel (just for the limited run)? In other words, a special "F1" grade Endura.

Carlos,
I still favour a Delica sized knife. Since this will be a "dress" knife, I think that size is more suitable (no pun intended ), for me at least. I must say I had my heart set on a damasteel blade but maybe the scales could be simplified.
quote:
Still haven't come up with something really neat that didn't break the budget (yours and mine).

Thanks Sal, it's very nice of you to keep an eye on my budget .

Hi Clay,
Are you sure this will be a "dress" knife? I thought that we are starting over with a clean sheet of paper. We'll need Sal to chime in on reasonable parameters for us to play in.
I do have one more unusual notion I'd like to air: an Endura with brushed steel bolsters and green micarta scales. Not just a 25th Anniversary piece, but a quiet tribute to someone who I think had some influence on the development of Spyderco (the pattern may only be recognized by some old time knife nuts).

This is going to be tricky. How does a company which is reknowned for excellent knives and being on the cutting edge of development, go about making something special ???
I must admit that the idea of damascus/damasteel sounds very exciting. Ok, it might not be cheep, but **** this is Spyderco's 25th anniversary.

While we're chucking suggestions in the ring, I would have to say IMHO the hollow ground Police blade is the most stylish thing I have seen.
However, if it is going to be as neet as Sal hints, I think it will be a dress knife. If it's that good there's no way I'm taking it anywhere near a building site (that's what the Military is for) , so that might possibly rule out the Police blade

Something different, but within a budget. Hmmm....
How about a Delica sized knife, maroon G-10, and "Spyder's" carved into one side(Like the pugs on the new Wegner). Plus a damasteel blade. I'm sure that won't break the budget. Well maybe a little.

Carlos, as the kids at school say, are we going to be examined on this? My guess would be Al Mar, do I win anything? Seriously, I think Blades might be on the right track. As much as I like the idea of liners and bolsters, they will add a lot to the cost. OTOH linerless micarta scales shouldn't be too expensive. It might be sacrilege but I was even thinking that I could live with burgundy FRN scales if it meant having a damasteel blade and clip.

Hi Clay,
You win the right to wear an extra "spyder" on your official Troublemaker's insignia.
But remember, we didn't come up with the bolster idea, it was suggested by Spyderco's General Manager through Sal; and I quote:
"I personally do not want to use FRN, neither does Jeff (Our GM). He suggested using a bolster and some type of oddball handle, stag, ivory micarta or?
sal"
Our original idea was Damasteel blade and clip, and Ivory Micarta scales (no bolsters). I am assuming that this notion has been officially canned beacuse of the cost of the Damasteel, not the bolsters which were tacked onto the idea later. The Viele has bolsters and micarta (and VG-10 steel!) at a rather reasonable price, so I don't think that they were or are the problem.
A "SERE Tribute" Endura would fulfill Jeff's notion of bolsters with an "oddball" scale material. But judging by the offical silence methinks this idea too is a dud.

I'll put in a vote for white (or ivory) micarta. One of the first best synthetic handle materials and still very underutilized in the industry. Also, the contrast with gray's of a damasteel would be very dramatic. My other suggestion would be for a lanyard liner tube such as on the Calypso Jr. Micarta. Many people comment on how much character it adds to the knife.
Delica knife, damascus blade(plain edge?), Ivory micarta handle, and a black Spyderco spyder with a web on the handle(like the Co-pilot A.G. Russell had for sale years ago. I think that was something expoxied to the side. Anyways...) No clip, but a rayskin slip pouch with a clip. That would be nice.
