Just Another "Silly" Idea

#1

Post by ramlanrafie »

What about having all spyderco products that can be dismantled by ELU. It seem that most of us like to "play" with it. We like to clean it, oiled it or at least just to know how it works. This (IMO) will create some DIY feel to the ELU.

Even for the FRNR handle; separating handle with the blade and the lockback.

Sorry guys, just another silly idea.

Saudara Ramlan,

Tampering with the Spydie will void warranty... <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> I guess with Spyderco's excellent QC and QIC, there will be very little need for ELUs to take down their knives <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> Good maintainence culture will ensure the longevity and service life of your piece ~ IMHO.. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Hi Ramlanrafie. All too often, taking them apart and putting them back together is more difficult that many imagine. We get many back "in a baggie" saying "Please put this back together&quot<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.

I'm a new guy in this forum so I don't know what all those anacronyms mean, but here's my two cents anyway: Actually, the idea of having a folding knife that you can dismantle yourself is not so silly. Ernest Emerson (the custom knife maker of Emerson Knives) knows that in some situations it necessary to thoroughly clean the inner workings of your knife in the field-meaning there is no time to send it off to the company. Emerson builds his knives with slotted screws (as opposed to rivets or torx screws that are found on many folders today) so disassembly can be performed by anyone with the most basic of tools. I kind of wish that other knife manufacturers would follow his example.

Hi John. Welcome to the forum.

Many of our knives do come apart, and some of our customers do take them apart and put them back together successfully, some do not.

Ernies knives do not have parts like our adjustable pivots (adjustable for positioning the blade in horinontal relation to the liner, not simply loosening or tightening the pivot).

These types of features and our very close tolerances make this puzzle more difficult to put together.

BTW (by the way)
ELU (end line user) (as opposed to dealer or distributor, all of whom are "customers"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
FRN (Fiberlgass reinforced nylon. "Zytel" is one brand of FRN).
IMO (in my opinion)
DIY (do it yourself)

Thanks for the info Sal. I still have a lot to learn about Spyderco's products and lingo. I've been an Emerson fan for years, but I am starting to appreciate the quality and design of Spyderco. My Endura 50/50 has yet to let me down and is in my pocket all the time.

Dude,
Most Spydies are built tough for years of abuse. You can count on Spyderco's Service and Warranty guys to take care of your Spydie if it falls sick... <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
