Question for Sal and/or others........

#1

Post by Tom Puderbaugh »

Hi gang,

Just bought a fully serrated 2001 model Endura for back-up to my concealed handgun. Really love it as it packs about as much blade as possible into the lightest/flattest package around. But I do have a question....

My work environment is office/professional, so I must pay very close attention to "low profile". I like how the Endura rides fairly low in my front pocket but there is still about 1" of knife that shows. So I'm thinking about making a slight modification to the pocket clip that would allow the knife to ride even lower. Follow along with me and see if I'm crazy......

It looks to me like you could --

1. Loosen the screw and rotate the pocket clip so that it is facing 180 degrees from the normal position (facing AWAY from the knife instead of lying alongside of it).

2. Remove the screw, flip the clip over and reinstall/tighten it down in this "180 degree out of phase" position. (May have to straighten the metal clip a bit near the hole to make this happen. You'll see what I mean.)

3. Finally, rebend the steel pocket clip back into its normal position.

If I could pull this off, it would allow the knife to ride almost below the pocket line for VERY low profile carry. Nothing would really be visible except for the pocket clip.

(This modified "reverse bend" clip would be very similar to the one EDI uses on their Genesis II knife.)

Any thoughts, comments? (And I wonder how much Spyderco would charge me for a new clip if I "muck" mine up?!)

Finally friends, don't kill me in your replies....it's just an idea! But what do you think?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Try it and let us know if it works. I'm sure you'l be able to get another clip if need be. Jeff/1911.

I think this would be a great idea
A hint to Spyderco : supply 2 clips => normal and "deep" carry )
Next to the EDI, some Gerbers have something similar : http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?GB5847 (SL)

Great idea (about Spyderco making available two types of clips)--hopefully, at least one will be black in color. I've seen this clip modification done on a Boker knife and the result was satisfactory. I think your success will depend on how much bend the metal clip will take before breaking. Keep us informed of your results.

I just thought this up as I was reading the post.... What if you take the clip rotate it 180 Degrees then bend it OVER the handle as to cup the bottom of the knife? It would put less stress on the clip, I think. You would have to put the clip on the other side of the knife to have the blade be oriented for opening though. This might give you an even deeper carry.

Ehh, supposed to be Thorin... : )

Ronin,
You might want to try searching on this forum about tightening the blade. This can be done by "mashing" the pivot pin slightly with a vice or hammer. This will tighten up the blade and reduce any play. BE CAREFUL however, as this can really screw up your knife. Read up on it first. You might want to even start another topic and ask people's advice before you try it.

Ronin,

You are going to have a hard time getting a Blue G10 Native. Have you considered getting one of the G10 inlay Natives? These are probably still obtainable and very attractive.

Hey Tom. Have been extremely busy for several days, and am now finding some time to catch up.

While I'm a great fan of Spyderco knives, deep carry is not often a priority in their designs. I'd like to suggest a blade made by another company.

I've been buying CRKT knives for a couple years or so. Only recently bought any of the Apaches. IMHO, they are the best self-defense production knife I've handled. (That of course, leaves out a great many.)

The Apache rides pretty low. It has an ATS34 blade with distal taper, so a very slim blade. Very pointy, yet enough belly to slash reasonably well.

Smoky Mountain Knife Works has had the Apaches on closeout for a bit. As of last night, the only one they had left was the medium size in the plain blade. $20. Aluminum handle, long enough to use full hand. I'd probably be carrying the medium, except I have the large too.

So, if descretion is really important, yet having an effective self-defense blade is also needed, I'd give it a look.

For deep carry, don't believe any knife rides so low as the Al Mar Sere 2K. The clip comes off the end of the knife. But, its a pretty large knife.

Hey Tom, I think I'll try that with my Delica. A couple days ago I snagged the clip on a door and it bent the clip out to a 45 degree angle away from the handle, so I don't have anything to lose!

Dear Tom:

Since the clip on the Endura has a spring temper, any drastic reshaping may cause it to snap, especially right near the hole for the mounting post.

If you're handy, you can fashion a very nice clip from the 303 or 304 stainless steel sheet available from most knifemaking suppliers. It takes a bit of time and effort, but the raw steel stock has enough hardness to bend reasonably well while retaining its "spring."

I have a private student who suffers from a similar problem at work. I solved it by making him an inside-the-pocket kydex rig for his MOD Tempest. The pancake-style sheath actually carries the Tempest in the open position and is cut to fit the outline of his pocket. This keeps the handle in a consistent location and prevents the sheath from coming out with the knife. When carried in the pocket of reasonably loose-fitting pants, nothing shows.

By the way, W.E. Fairbairn used to use a similar carry when he was in Shanghai, except that he cut out the bottoms of his pockets to accomodate longer fixed-blade knives.

I have also made similar rigs that are designed to allow the sheath to come out of the pocket. It is attached to the belt or a belt loop by a short lanyard and releases like James Piorek/Blade Rigger's "Satic Cord" carry - clearing the blade safely away from the body.

Another solution for discreet carry is one of Mike Sastre's neck sheaths for the Endura. I've used these to carry an Endura both open and closed (two different styles of sheath) with great success. For an even lower profile, skip the telltale dog tag chain or 550 cord and attach the sheath to one of the commercial neck lanyards that are so popular today. Many business folks hang ID badges and keys off these things, so they don't attract any undue attention.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

mike j
