Viele vs. Viele vs. Viele

#1

Post by GronK »

My first Viele was a love-hate relationship with a small CRKT Viele Wasp. Pretty as a picture, nice steel, but bad ergonomics. Felt like a hand full of porcupine. A couple of weeks ago I bought an "old style" Spyderco Viele to check out the serrated edge. Classy looks, smooth action, nice steel. Liked it so much I ordered a new Spyderco Viele with plain edge. It arrived today and I am in awe! The new pivot, combined with what appears to be a thicker liner for the lock make it solid as any liner lock I've tried, while still as smooth as the old version. The VG-10 blade came hair-popping sharp and, if the reports I've read are true, should stay that way for a long time. Kudos to Spyderco! They've improved every aspect of the knife but one. The micarta on the back (clip) side is not polished as well as on the old one. A minor detail on a knife as close to perfection as this one!

Great to hear the positive reactions to the new Viele. I have the old version w/plain edge and I really like the knife.

I look forward to picking up the new version.

Good luck with it! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

You won't be dissappointed if you do! It's a sign of a great company when "new and improved" really mean it!! BTW, if you have never used VG-10 be very careful! This is one sharp mamba! Fortunately, I own a WH with this steel so I knew to watch out.

Thanks for the input. This is the knife I will wear for "dressier" occassions when jeans won't do. Guess it is, in fact, another valid improvement!

I just got one of these VG10 Vieles today. Egads! Just to test out how sharp it was I folded today's paper in half and sliced gently once (once!) until the blade caught. From that point I cut the entire newspaper in half by just lightly *pushing* the blade.
Absolutely amazing.

And yeah it's nice looking too. Speaking of nice looking, anyone see the custom work they do with the handles at Santa Fe Stoneworks? If you want a dressy knife, those take the cake.

I agree with all the good comments that have been made about the new style Viele. I have had one since right after they became available. This is one of the smoothest opening knives I have had the pleasure of using. It does hold an edge very well and when you resharpen it and work the factory edge off it will resharpen easier than you think. Good Luck to you other Viele owners.
