SOG v.s. Spyderco

#1

Post by Adr3nalin »

I have been to the Sog website and i was looking at some of their knives I noticed that the majority of their knives are made with 440A steel. I compared their knives to Spyderco's and i want to know why they put better steel in most of their knives??

also they were the company the US Navy SEALS picked for their official knife..

why doesn't Spyderco make any "fixed blade" knives so they may enter into the Navy SEAL "stress" tests?

If someone can convince me to stay wit my spyderco remote release (aus-8) i may just switch to SOG

440A is not a better steel than AUS8. I checked my steel chart and 440A has 0.65-0.75% Carbon compared to 0.70-0.75% in AUS8. OTOH 440A has more Chromium which will make it more stain resistant but interferes with the grain structure causing the formation of large carbides. AUS8 has an extremely fine grain structure and still takes the shapest edge of any of the steels I own. Typical hardness figures are 55-57 HRC for 440A compared to 57-58 for AUS8. BTW Spyderco was the first company to offer blades in VG10, is the only production company using CPM440V and is now replacing AUS8 with ATS55 in many of its products. No company uses better steels than Spyderco. If you're not happy with AUS8 look at the Calypso Jr (VG10), Native (CPM440V) or Delica (ATS55). For more informatiom on steel types have a look at BladeForums' Steel FAQ by Joe Talmadge, http://www.BladeForums.com/features/faqsteel.shtml

BTW if I had a dollar for every product which claimed to be "official Navy SEALS" I'd be a rich man, especially at our exchange rate .

No we do have our own Australian dollar, though it's not worth much at the moment .
You might find this article by Mission knives informative, http://www.missionknives.com/articles/sealtales2.html

There is no "Official Knife that the SEALs Use".

The SEAL 2000 did pass a review/test process, but there is no "official" knife that is issued to and used by the SEALs.

Here's a link to a thread on KnifeForums where the military and SOG confirm this:

Adr3nalin. There are a lot of Seals using
Spyderco. We have a "thank you" award in our atrium from the San Diego Seals team.

As Brian says, there is no "official" Seal team knife.

SOG also says they got the idea to put an "opening hole" in the blade from Scagel. I gave Spencer a Harpy in the mid 80's. He carried that knife every day for years before he "suddenly" got the idea for a hole in the blade (from Scagel). I guess he never noticed the hole in the Harpy blade.

Adr3nalin - Malaysian Ringgit is the official currency of Malaysia. Its worth four times less than the US Dollar... *SOB!* But nevertheless, having them 'lil spydies is worth every Ringgit even if I have to pay four times the retail price in the US...
