lum chinese question (plus praise)

#1

Post by clovisc »

today was an unexpectedly awesome :spyder: day for me -- i found and bought a blue, plain-edged lum chinese folder for only $60. it's been sharpened once or twice, and there's the tiniest bit of wear on the edges of the handle... but that's fine with me, because i wanted a lum chinese as a user anyway -- now i have no excuse not to put it in my EDC!

in my opinion, this is the finest and best-looking spydie i've handled to date... and probably my favorite blade in my humble-yet-rapidly-expanding knife collection. ultra comfy in my hand, slices like crazy, and i love the little "poink!" sound it makes when the blade locks into place! great knife, sal! (and mr. lum, for that matter, should you be reading)! this is one i'll be proud to carry as an "after work" EDC blade.

a couple questions for the spyder knuts: anyone know how many lum chinese folders were made with blue handles, as opposed to green handles? were any produced in any other colors or handle materials?

One thousand blue Lums. I have one and mine's a user too. The C65 is by far my favorite Spydie. I have a serrated green model and it has THE sharpest serrations I've ever seen on a Spydie. It was a crime to discontinue this knife, however I understand why. It must have been a slow seller at it's (rather high) price point.

there are 2 other colors I recall:

- black with spyder web engraving in grey.
- cranberry

and these two are really rare... the cranberry might be unique. :)

clovisc,

What a tremendous find! Blue PE :D

I looked far and wide for one of those beauties and eventually had to settle for a green SE. Still a fabulous knife though!

Regards,

Simon.

yes! i really couldn't believe how the thing just sort-of fell into my lap!

i'd absolutely love to see a picture of one in black with the spider web engraving, if anyone has one...

john f. jensen still has twenty-some of the green serrated ones in his inventory, i think...

Another happy Lum EDC'er here! I also notice that it passes the office-friendly test fairly well.

Heres a scan from an older catalog with the spyder-web pattern.

I do myself love the Chinese Lum. I have 2 with both of them being Jade Green. I have an SE and a PE. I don't stop there though. I have the Bob Lum fixed blade made with AUS-8. I also have 2 of the Titanium C-46 folders along with the G-10 version of that same knife. None of them are for sale or trade; thank you very much. I do indeed hope that Mr. Lum and Mr. Glesser read this thread; take it very seriously and get him and Mr. Lum back to the drawing board. The one in Golden Colorado please! ;) :spyder:

Was the cranberry actually produced? I have a feeling that it may be a result of someone having fun with Photoshop. Also I think the black one shown is actually a dark photo of an engraved blue model. Of course this may just be sour grapes that I don't have either of them. The Chinese Folder is still right up there among my favourite :spyder: s.

the cranberry was only a color test in pre-production.

The :spyder: Lum Chinese is probably about as lefty friendly as a RH liner lock can get, and I really like the looks of it. It has smooth elegant lines both open and closed and mananges the not-so-easy trick of looking both graceful and efficient at the same time. I liked it enough in fact, to order a larger, LH, custom one from Bob Lum.

Yeah, the Chinese Lum is my favorite EDC. I just love the shape.Open and closed. It is truly SUBLIME - one of the most elegant and aesthetic designs, where function did not have compete with design, IMHO. I own four. 2 green PE, and one SE (all are numbered) and one blue one, which was a wonderful gift from a person on this forum.....I'd love to see a re-issue with black almite or micarta scales and a red :spyder: bug....but I've asked for this before.....I'm patient....and hopeful
