Wharncliff SPOT - my modification

#1

Post by RLR »

Folks, I got a SPOT for cheap and loved the feel but didn't groove that much on the S blade - it just didn't work for me on this knife that was to be a utility blade. Plus, sharpening that deep crook drove me nuts. So, I modified the blade and LOVE IT EVEN MORE!!! This took about an hour (because I did it by hand with a file and 3 stones) but was worth it. I think the utilitarian value of the knife is increased a hundredfold and none of the SPOT qualities suffer. What do you think?

I like it! Looks good to me. Just one hour of work with nothing buit files?

Interesting... Either you used a diamond file or the steel can't be that hard :)

I alwas thought that filing hardened steel woud a) ruin the file and b) that it would take you years

Anyway, good job!

Cheers, Rob

AUS6 is soft, easy to reprofile. I used a Bastard File to remove the metal, then coarse, fine and 8000 grit ceramic. Since AUS6 is soft, it also strops in seconds to a shaving edge.

Aus6 Not That Soft

#9

Post by JDEE »

According to my data Spyderco has the Spot at about 57-58HRC - that's not that soft and in fact is pretty hard for Aus6. Of course a good barstard file is still going to work on hardened steel at that level.

Hey that looks very good indeed, if the sheath still fits as well, then my compliments.

Aloha RLR!

SweeeeeeeeeeeeeeT job there!..Are you serious though? ONLY an hour's worth to reprofile the blade?

Great job...I wanna redo a SPOT with a Hawksbill...although I doubt it'd only take me an hour! LOL! :D

God bless!

Yes, really about an hour! Clamped the blade horizontal on the table and filed down to the line I had drawn in marker. Flip over, clean up other side to line - maybe 20-25 minutes. Unclamp, start back and forthing on the coarse stone RIGOROUSLY until a pseudo edge geometry took shape - another 20 or so minutes. Then it's just the regular sharpening of a Wharncliff, fine, then ceramic, then strop. Don't forget that this blade type was designed to be the easiest to sharpen. Once you lay down the right angle, you just push, push, push away.

Thanks for the kind words.
