NS : The pros & cons of assault weapons

As you probably know, then ten year ban

on guns like the AK-47 ( which comes immediately to mind ) and others has come to an end. I have my opinion of these

firearms alotta you might not like...

Statistics aside, as most of you are LE

would <i>you </i> want these streetsweepers

to fall into the hands of gangbangers?

( In New Haven hundreds of'em were confiscated ) And with terror cells roaming

the U.S. with all the fake ID & "terror funds" they can muster would <i>you </i> want

them shootin' up America with these weapons?

Myself - I owned ( briefly ) a CHICOM folding stock AK ( before the ban ) All the

indoor ranges would allow only up to .44mag

and Bluetrail range in Wallingford didn't

allow for "machine gunning" on the range...

What am I owning this for? It just sat in

a carry case under my bed - I had plenty of

pistols to deal with intruders ( later a single shot Baikal 12ga mag ( loaded to SF

specs in the <i>Improvised Munitions Handbook </i> - one shot would stop a freighttrain! )

In the opinion of this editor firepower doesn't always win battles ( if only on a battlefield <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) And while there are collectors out there - I just don't see much

practical use for'em in self defense / home

defense when a good shotgun'd do.

As for <i>justifiable lethal force </i> the

Special Forces credo rings clear :

<i>"Your mind is your <b>primary </b> weapon" </i>

Everyone has a right to their opinion on this subject just as they do on any subject. That is what is great about this country. I was a LE officer for 24 years so I can speak from that stand point as well as a private citizen now. I own two AK varients, an AR-15, L1A1 and other rifles and several handguns. I keep a few hadguns loaded in the house for self defense and now have a CCW since I retired from LE. I like shooting the military rifles just as much as the old Mosin and Chec bolt action rifles. I am lucky that here in Louisiana we have outdoor ranges where you can shoot all sorts of weapons as long as they are legal. So why take away my pleasure because a criminal can use a legal weapon to do illegal things. The weapons ban didn't keep the criminals from converting AKs to fill automatic and using them in California against the police when as they did a bank robbery.

No matter how many laws you pass, criminals will never obey them, they will only impact the freedoms of the law abiding.

My opinion, yours may vary.

It's interesting that you worded your post as you did in saying "on guns <b>like </b> the AK-47..." Because that's all the ban did, it banned guns THAT APPEARED SIMILAR to the AK-47. AK-47's are select fire pr "automatic" weapons, which have been heavily regulated in this country since 1935 and still are.

The AW ban had absolutely nothing... ZERO... to do with automatic weapons.

It's also interesting that you used the term "Streetsweeper," since a Streetsweeper is a particular weapon that is considered by ATF to be a "destructive device" and is still illegal to own after the ban expired.

CNN.com and the various wire services trumpeted today that the streets would be flooded with "AK-47s, Uzis, and TEC-9s." Interesting twist of the facts. since the first two are still illegal to own except in under very strict circumstances, and the manufacturer of the TEC-9 has been out of business for some years. The anti-gun agenda has never allowed the facts to impede it before though, so why start now...

I have been LE for over 27 years. I have never taken an assault weapon away from a bad guy that was registered to him. They were either stolen or had no registry information.

Over the years I have owned about every type of "assault weapon" I could get my hands on. Most of them just sat in the safe until they were sold or trades.

I think the assault weapons ban did nothing to curb crime. It made a whole lot of law biding people criminals.

I would love to buy an AR-15 or even an AK, but since I live in a socialist state it is against state law anyway. So the end of the federal ban means nothing to me.

I think it's wonderful that racy-looking armorments and larger-capacity magazines will be able to be manufactured and sold again.

There is a downside:

We only have so much money and so much storage space.

Zrexxer,

Agree or disagree, I'm glad that AET is back and posting. If you hate what he says, you end up thinking more and typing harder; if you like what he says, that's very cool, too.

Aloha Allen!

I for one, never understood the ban. "specially the one where anything with a folding stock is considered an assault weapon. Okee-doke...

I'm glad it is over. Now, i can feel the extra weight in the clip of my G17 legally!!!

Take care my friend.

The ban never worked. It only made lawful people outlaws in alot of cases. The people who didn't care about the law could still get whatever they wanted.
I am glad it is over. The 10 rd mag restiction was a joke, all it did was make a few dealers rich.
Now that it is Monday I can take my 10/22 with a 30 rd mag out and have fun...WAIT I could do that Sunday too.Well maybe now the 30 rd mag will be cheaper to get.

Gang -

Point is, it hurt the owner's of Glocks,
Berettas, and other pistols with a capacity over 10rds - the AWB is no different from the FSA of 1958 - it outlawed an image, but
not youth crime. Knives are tame by comparison, take 30rds of "heat" from <i>any </i> assault rifle though, and you'll see the difference. It's the loonies that ruin it in Our society. My point is one could do better for home defense with the martial shotgun than with a rifle that'll pass through 3-4 walls of the family house & travel on. One of the thing's here is most
forum-ites don't live in LA, NY or the other big cities where these thing's became
a menace ( law-abiding citizenry aside )

The Tommy gun of "the roaring 20's" wrecked
it's havoc - other than if you're an FFL holder - do you own one of them?

And it never ceases to amaze me : LE are the
1st to ***** if they have to "suit up" to take on a loonie armed with a Uzi, AK, or
whatever the choice of arms happens to be.

I don't think those guys & gals in Iraq think to highly of assault rifles, being shot at with'em every day...

The day America cities end up a worn torn
like Iraq is when I think we'll wake up -
and according to this "ban lift" every red blooded American can own one of these - how
they enter the "black market" is beyond me.

No, criminals don't obey laws - so why have
assault rifles in the commercial trade for them to eventually get their hands on?

The ban did nothing but make assault weapons more expensive. I bought a chinese sks with a 30 round detachable mag on it a year ago at a gun show. There were no ATF people wondering around making sure everything was legal. This gun would still be illegal if I had the 30 round mag on it today. There are still laws 922r or something that ban the import of assault weapons. All the sunset of the awb does is allow you to purchase guns with magazines that hold over 10 rounds as long as they're made in the USA. A lot of people think since the ban is over they can just start converting everything they have to full auto, with a grenade launcher, a folding stock, and armor piercing exploding rounds. This is what they want you to think. I BET there will be shooting in the next couple of weeks. I bet a cop and a baby will get killed by a full auto ak47 and then they'll make some new law that is even tougher.

An "assault rifle" by definition is a light caliber FULLY-AUTOMATIC (or selective fire) rifle. The so-called "assault weapon" ban, never was. It was a ban on semi-automatics that looked too scary.

AET,

I think that the trouble is being shot at all, not being shot with certain types of rifles. If our troops were being maimed and killed with musket guns, my guess is that they'd still be unhappy.

I personally don't see the point of banning much of anything. Criminals, by their very nature, do not follow laws. All laws as this did was limit those who follow them.

Also, a "streetsweeper" is also slang for a sawed-off shotgun, at least around here.

There you go, right from the Law Enforcement's point of view.

About the only thing that I can add is my assault weapon is now MY ANTI-TERRORIST WEAPON TO BE USED FOR MY HOMELAND DEFENSE!!

Actually, during the despotic regime, there was a decrease in crime in some areas, but that was due more to 'zero-tolerance' policing policies and related community incentives than a prohibition on the manufacture or importation of futuristic-looking semi-automatic parts and accessories. Well, futuristic to those of us who grew up before 1911.

I'm firmly of the mind that increasing the numbers of law-abiding citizens who are safety and defensive trained gun-owners will decrease the number of crimes committed. Well, technically, increasing the amount of law-abiding citizens in and of themselves decreases the numbers of law-avoiding citizens. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Luckily, it's not a black-and-white argument and the statistics only suggest various causalities while stopping short of proving them, so we can argue until we're blue in the keyboard.

I'm a LE officer, as well. Often, we take inmates into the community and occasionally the inmate has friends that would like him to be free.

Here are a few facts about "Assault Weapons":
1. Assault Weapons fire selectively fully AND Semi-Automatic; the rifles that many refer to as "assault weapons" are not actually assault weapons.

2. Legally owned semi-autos are only used in one-tenth of one percent of all gun-related crimes. That's **** low! Can anyone guess how many legally-owned fully automatic machine guns have been used in crimes since 1934? Anyone? Two crimes. Just two.

3. These so-called "Assault Weapons" have been available for the past ten years. There have been some very minor changes to them (such as no bayonet lugs, no flash suppressors) so that they could still be sold. Crime will not skyrocket like many think now that they're "once again available", because they've BEEN available!

4. They are widely used for sporting purposes. I've used mine in competition, and know many others who do, too.

All the hoopla about "Assault Rifles" is merely a group of people being phobic about inanimate objects.

Howdy Allen! I have been a big-city LEO for over 20 years. Oddly enough, before I was in LE I believed many of the anti-gun arguments, but have since learned most of them are total BS, and I now support the opposite position, having just renewed my NRA membership for another 5 years. (I ALWAYS supported the right to carry knives, ever since I was kid; I transferred this belief to firearms.) A few thoughts on the sunsetting of the AWB: (1) My "LE/GOVT-only" Colt AR15, purchased with permission from my agency during the ban, is no deadlier than my wife's post-ban KAC SR-15. (2) Most gang-bangers and wannabes shoot "assault weapons" even worse, from a marksmanship standpoint, than they do conventional shotguns and handguns. (3) The most common firearm carried by street punks are cheap handguns, for which they do not have carry licenses anyway. (4) There is a black market for untraceable firearms from foreign sources, and our borders are too porous to stem this flow. Totally banning a category of weapon will simply increase this firearms smuggling, IMHO.

And in the Peoples Republic of California we have our own law so the expiree of the fed law makes no nevermind.........and the criminals just keep doing crime, with any weapon they want. Only thing is we citizens have less and less ability to protect ourselves and our loved ones. We basically can't obtain carry permits. That is unless we are part of the anti-gun liberal elite.

Criminals do crime folks. That's why they are criminals, they DON'T do laws.

My 2 cents.
