Close tolerances on knives

#1

Post by AllenETreat »

I noticed this on my "usual suspect" the Cricket -

While adding some militec I decided to see

if the lack of blade play was due to close

tolerances ( i.e. fit & finish ) I took a

piece of phone note paper & it barely

went between the blade / handle area!

This got the Great Pyramid beat! Or is on the same level : the tolerance(s) on this

"wonder of the world" are one could barely

stick a razor blade in between the bricks.

Sal or one of the crew : is this a combination of CAD/CNC/CAM and / or quality

control? For a "production" knife this is about the "tightest fit" I've yet seen

( only Microtech came close )

What say the augurers?

Actually, although my new SS Cricket has no blade play, the stop pin is pretty loose. Although both screw are tight the whole unit rattles if is not adjusted every week or so.

Blondie -

It's the same way on the FRN Cricket - it's
made to be adjustable ( the screw ) so the
tension on the blade can be adjusted. Mine's
set at about medium.

Allen,

I think you are referring to the pivot pin, I was referring to the pin, directly over the locking bar, that engages the blade tang when the knife is open. I'll get a picture later.

Hi Allen, welcome back. Is it the FRN Cricket or the SS one?
Speaking for my part, I have the PE Delica with me right as we speak (usually there is the SE but now it was PE time) and a sheet of plain paper slid fairly easy between the blade and the handles. No blade play, neither vertically nor horizontally. I'll try the other Spydies when I get home, as I'm at the office right now.

Boy Allen,

I missed these crazy posts of yours! LOL! I think that Mr. Blonde was talking about the stop pin...

Phone book page eh? Well, I have noticed that on one of my SS Cricks the liner BARELY engages. Maybe it needs a break in period, but, *sigh*...I have yet to commit it as a user! LOL!
