I agree, the Civilian is a good knife. I have had one since 1993. What a blade!

If it were legal to carry one here (WV) I would already own one. CCW does not cover large-ish knives here (I am a certified CCW instructor) to enable reciprocity with some other states. I may eventually break down and purchase and carry one anyway.

I have not had the opportunity to actually hold one in my hand, but I can only imagine...

I received my Civilian and tested it for 2 full days - and let me tell you (only if you care)...
Now I am convinced that there is a misconception about that you can not stab with this blade. I know that the Civilian is far from a utility tool; however that stabbing is problematic ... well...
This is simply just not true (!)
I can see that this blade strong side is not stabbing... and some may afraid that the tip (leading 1/2 inch) might break off (although it is stronger than it looks and I have penetrated a 2mm thick 2 layer laminated wood with ease).
The first 2 inches travels simply and straight trough the target...
In fact - holding the Civilian southpaw I see an advantage of this blade design... as the tip pointing to the target and I can stab with just a quick punching motion.
After the first 2 inches going straight through the wood there is a steering
by the tip and the spine of the blade but this is the point when the spider edge comes to play.
As a slashing tool - well I shouldn’t have to say anything, but...
It's a RIPPER(!), and simply the best... period.
The long blade is a huge advantage versa short... yes... size IS matter(!)
It's slim and light - so I can reach further and faster.
It's not a utility knife.. so what.. that’s the reason that now I carry two...
The Chinook and Civilian... heh heh ;)
Anyhow - I am convinced that the Civilian is one of the best fighting knives for a novice and pro as well.

Surgeon, glad you like your Civie, have a couple myself. As far as carrying one for self defense, I might suggest you give serious thought to Sal's post in this thread. Especially where he states
The original purpose of the design of the knife was not as a weapon. (clearly described in the "Spyderco Story" by Ken Delavigne) Which apparently had bearing on the "intent" question.
Note that the knife he is referring to is the Spyderco Military.

While I, like you I am sure, would rather be judged by twelve than carried by six, I'd prefer to make it as easy as possible for those twelve good citizens to figure out who was the "good guy" and who was the "bad guy". Carrying something that, makes it easier for the prosecution to paint me as some kind of a "spook wannabe" just doesn't appeal very much to me.

Thanks for pointing it out for me...
Even I carry two knives (which is my legal right if it's concealed and not in the ready to use position) – In the place of that student I would of run... I'm not about to get into a fight where someone could die because of some stupid situation - also - I rather get beaten up to the point I can take it before I pull a knife... (Because if I’ll pull one, probably I have to use one) I'm just a taxpayer citizen, a father of two, not an alcoholic, I don't even have a speeding ticket... and I don't really buy that someone fears of his/her life unless situation is obvious, way extreme or weapon(s) involved. I know that this isn't so simple because who knows where is that fine line or that legal line - especially not when under influence of alcohol. I am still not saying that student did or did not have the right to use knife - and if it was or wasn't an accident. I do not know the details of this case - therefore I won't form any opinion about it. However - don't mix things what doesn't go together and I don't drink and drive, carry a knife or gun... etc. So simple is that. If I have a gun or knife on me I do not drink and it's not because of after one beer I don't know what am I doing but credibility goes out of the window and I don't want to explain a drunk incident... Most likely something going down in seconds that later on lawyers will discuss in months if not years… so better I go for 100%.
By the way - If someone kill someone with a knife do you think its matter if it's a Delica, Civilian or a in this case a Military?
I prefer Civilian... so what(?)… and not o kill but defend.
Do I have the right to carry?? Yes! Ok…Next.
If it's a lethal weapon than any folding is... so kitchen knives... so scissors... and anything pointy. If somewhere it have been stated that this knife by design only can be used as a attacking assault tool than I going to stay away from the Civilian and keep it at home – but again… why did I purchased it at the first place??? Or better… why have been sold to civilians??? Why any of us have one??? Why someone carrying a knife of any type at all??? – my answer would be: because I have the right. And I have the right to defend it.
Anyway if someone trying to kill me or my family and I have to pull a knife … well ... let it be something I trust … let it be a top of the line Civilian.
I was just posting a comment on the Civilian as a self-defense folding... that’s all.
Believe me - I am not about to danger anyone’s life but defend my own and my loved ones. I do remember every time – even a “BAD” guy is someone’s father, son, or brother.
I hope you agree…

I completly agree Surgeon.
I don't know either if the Harvard guy killed someone by accident but I do know something: HE killed him, the Military is what he used to do so. It's most likely an error of judgement, and maybe alcohol has something to do with that but he will have to face the facts and be responsible for what he did. Very good comment.
