OT - The Devil At My Job

#1

Post by Jimd »

Daywalker, here's one of the reasons that I'm so contemptuous of the management where I work....

Last week, one of our officers fell down an entire flight of stairs, injuring himself badly.

An ambulance was summoned.

During all this, our major was coming to work. As he walked in, he stepped over the injured officer, looked at him, and walked on. He said not a word, nor did his facial expression change one iota.

While waiting to enter our Front Gate, an office secretary ran up and told the major the news of the officer, and the fact that they'd called an ambulance.

The major, with his typical grim, stone-faced expression, replied, "I know. I stepped over him." He then looked straight ahead, saying nothing more.

I've seen the same man, when a Signal 13 (Officer Needs Assistance) was called, completely ignore it. He continued walking down the corridor slowly as officers ran past him at full speed to save one of our own.

The man blatantly does not care about us, and he's proven it more times than I could ever post here. In fact, he goes out of his way to screw us over in a most ROYAL manner. He's done it to me more than once. In fact, if I posted some of the stories of things this man had done to me, you'd call me a straight liar.

One day, I wasn't feeling well on post. I pulled a chair out of a room next to my door, figuring if I sat down for a few minutes, I'd feel better. After all, it was count time and most of the crooks were locked in their cells. The Stone-Faced Major walked out of his office and down the corridor. I jumped up, shoved the chair back into the office, and watched him walk by. A few minutes later, a lieutenant came up to me and told me that I'd been written up because I didn't acknowledge the major as he walked by. They said I hadn't been paying attention. WHAT BULLCRAP! The prick was blatantly lying! I told the lieutenant that I wanted to take a look at the video tape with him to prove that I acknowledged the Great Stone Face. They refused. They told me to take the write-up, or else.

This man will refuse to speak to officers, but will entertain an inmate's whining for ten minutes.

To sum it up, many people in the prison want this man to be deceased. He's evil. Some of his nicknames are "The Devil", "The Devil's Son", "The Anti-Christ" (I invented that one), "Stone Face", "Mr. Smiley", "Mr. Happy", "Mr. Personality", and others.

Back in '99, my wife was pregnant. She went into labor prematurely, and the baby died. The major refused to let me use my bereavement leave, saying, "We're not going to do that for you." Instead, he told me that I'd have to use my vacation time.

I'd taken a few weeks off, because my wife and I were pretty messed up from the ordeal. When I came back to work, I had to deal with the major's discrimination. It's good I was busy consoling my wife, because otherwise, I might have carried out some other plans that were crossing my mind in that very difficult time.

This is just ONE of the pricks that I have to deal with where I work. Comparably, the inmates really aren't too bad. Everyone, including the Superintendent and our Deputy Superintendents, knows how miserable and sadistic the major is, but no one does anything about it. Everyone under his command is terrified of angering him.

jim-

This Major "PRICK" has a boss, does he not??

Maybe all of you need to pitch a *****!
Do you guys have a union or an employees association?

Or you could go way out of your way and be real nice to him when he is a jerk!
or
Get in his face and ask him what his problem is?

I know where you are coming from and it is a drag having to work like that....

Jim, Daywalker,
From what I gather, you guys are CO's. My pretty mountainside village of Dannemora, NY is dominated by a maximum security prison (CCCF)replete with it's 100 year old 40 foot walls. I think I'm the only male resident here that does not have a CO uniform in my closet. I always hear horror stories from my neighbors and buddies about what happens inside the walls. Not only do you have to take s**t from inmates but also from inept management. I just would like to say Thank You from us living outside the walls. We need guys like you because I can't do your job for a million bucks.

Jim

You have my sympathy. There is nothing worse that having someone in authority misusing his powers. I went through a similar situation and stood up against the person who was making my and a number of my colleagues lives a misery. He was a small man in every context who used his position to threaten and intimidate people.

Though my "work mates" all made a lot of noise about wanting to get the situation sorted out, when it came to the crunch, they all backed down! This left me out on a limb on my own.

I was told to back down but knew if I did I'd be in a worse position than I was before. So I went along the legal route. I got advice from the union representative and a solicitor/lawyer. I then prepared a diary of all the incidents where this individual had caused me problems.

To cut a long story short, when I filed the complaints others followed! There was a full investigation and eventually he was sent to a different area and soon after dismissed when his bad behaviour continued.

I left the job myself shortly after that because I was annoyed at my colleagues leaving me to fire the bullets.

I even thought of taking action myself. Don't be tempted, this is not the answer! You might feel better about it for a time, but the fact that you had behaved like the people you have to deal with daily would eventually grind you down.

This sort of behaviour doesn't belong in the 21st century! I hope that you are able to get the help needed to get this fool sorted out!

Regards Ken

HA!!! jim, that idiot sounds like the LT. who "cleared" me to go home! As we were putting away our batons and riot gear, he walked by me laughing. (FYI, this was AFTER I looked like Marvin the Martian BTW...) Man, was I ready to throw my helmet at him...

ken, these guy's Do have "bosses", but their heads are SO far up the right @$$e$ that NOTHING usually happens to them. I've seen this kind of thing happen here at my facility and they get suspension WITH pay!? BUT, if any one else OTHER than them commits the same "mistake", they get LWOPped or even possible termination. These are the "do as I say, not as i do" bunch...and our Union can't do much because like I said, they got their heads up the right @$$E$. Sad, eh?

Tbirdjoe...Aloha and welcome! Mahalo for the props man. The ONLY time we get a pat on the back is when we screw up...NEVER for a job well done. Sorry, but I whine about my place of employ now and then, and I KNOW someone is gonna say, "If you can't handle it, QUIT!" I WILL ask that someone to provide for me a better paying job, OR I'd like to see them give this job a try...The job is not hard ALL the time, and honestly, it is rewarding at times. It's just that a LOT of incidents didn't have to happen IF admin simply stayed out of it and the Captain did what he is SUPPOSED to do. After all, he is the "Chief of Security".

Jim, day by day brother, day by day. Psalm 121:7-8, and read Psalm 27...It's my work creed brother.

To all who responded, thank you very much. I do sincerely appreciate the kind words.

Do we have a union, does this guy have a boss, et al.?

Yes to all. Our union is so pitifully useless, I can't even begin to get into that, it would be a book-length response.

Daywalker hit it on the head (no pun intended); various officials at the prison have their head so far up others' asses, it's a shame.

I've tried the legal route, the union route, and on a few occasions, nearly tried "other" routes. None have worked.

And Ken, like you, I filed paperwork against the major, and thought my loud-mouthed coworkers were going to back me up. But it was not to be. When it all came down to it, everyone was too terrified of the major to cross him. And I was out on that creaking limb by myself.

The major is due to retire in a year or two, so we're fervently praying that it happens that soon. It will be a sweet Deliverance.

You have my deepest sympathy. Sometimes I believe that God no longer takes care of this world of $#it we're living in... But I guess it's just Lord works in mysterious ways...

Oh well, since I am one of God's spoiled children, I find quite normally to read The Book now and then. Besides, the Ecclesiastes is among my favorites

Allen, I suspect that"s one of the reasons we"re not allowed to carry weapons in the prison; because one of us would shoot that piece of $h1t.

He actually did it again this past week! As officers were responding to a fight on the new side of our jail, the Major (@$$hole) was walking down the corridor as officers rolled down the hallway. He never broke his slow stride, never responded. And he certainly saw them running.

He'd better pray he never needs back-up near my area.
