Warming up to Paramilitary

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

I got my Paramillie about two - three weeks ago, and I'm finally warming up to the model. I suspect mine was from the second production run, since the tang is fully closed in the area of the detent for the compression lock, and the locking tab extends all the way up to the spine. More importanty, there is no play whatsoever on my sample. It was pretty stiff and difficult to open and close one-handed. This was especially true for left-handed use, for which I wanted this knife. I must admit I was a bit disappointed, because Spyderco's are usually flawless right out of the box.I can tell you though, that the Paramillie has improved considerably. Just play with it a couple of weeks, open-close-apply tuffglide-open-close, and the action improved considerably. My paramillie is now just as good as my other Spydies. It just needed a break-in period that's all. The stiff action aside and a larger lock-tab for left-handed access, this model is flawless in terms of design, fit and finish. I especially like this conventional blade design and length, combine with the larger handle, there's more leverage.

Or rather 4 photos. In a few weeks I'll try to get some better shots, maybe in comparison with other models and post them on my website.

That's a great looking knife. It just needs a Meerkat-style clip on the tail end of the left scale for deep-pocket carrying.

Totally agree with you, Thombrogan.
I don't like the black clips.

Wouter,

Thanks for your post. I am very hungry for Paramilitary info right now as I'm about to order one myself. I look forward to your pictures on your website, as I have really enjoyed the other knives featured there. Keep up the great work!

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

Just got back from Dizzyland Orl.Fla. and saw this post, I'm very sad to say as I was packing for the trip I grabbed the para and discovered it has vertical play in the blade when opened and locked.
Very sad about this... I guess there is a production problem ?
I hate sending things back, but I'll never feel good about it if I don't.

Was this a common problem?

Actually, I do like the clip the way it is. For a lefty it is very good for retrieving and opening the knife. I'll go as far as a wire clip , or one that can be mounted on the proper side of the handle, for left-hand carry.

Cheers,

I got my Para out and noticed a little vertical play when it's locked in the open position. How much is acceptable? I mean it barely moves, but is that normal with the compression lock?

Well I've had a little vertical play in my first generation blue Salsa, which never got any worse since I tossed it in the kitchen drawer, which is akin to abuse now that my spouse has access to it
Anyway that compression lock never failed, although the play is indeed bothersome. If you're worried you probably should contact Spyderco.

My paramillie came today, i still do not know do i have newer or older run (could somebody explain?).

But i am quite impressed with this knife. It came even sharper then my bm griptilian and he shave my forearm and cut paper easily. Heck, i even sold my gripty because of it

What i like is the deep index finger groove and ergonomical handle, compression lock seens interesting either. Glad you decided to use dual liners instead of only one (like in Military).

And only thing that i don't like is a slightly wired edge (very very slightly) but i have sharpmaker so there supose to be no problem with sharpening at 40, right ?

The truth is that when i begin to interesting about knives and gear, i never looked about spyderco products, which looks kinda umm... weird to me (yeah, i remember where i am writing roght now ). I was always more interested in stricte "tactical badass designs" which maybe was looking great but for example was too big or thick for EDC tasks.

So, Spyderco looks like you have a new fan here

STOP! don't sharpen it at 40 degrees right away. Try it at 30 and you'll really get performance. I tried my first sharpening at 30 degrees (cut up a couple of heavy cardboard boxes and lost that grabby shaving edge, it would still cut newspaper though). I used the 30 degree angle and have been using it as a folding kitchen knife. At 30 degrees the S30V Para is displaying at least the same edge holding as my VG-10 Chinese folder with a 40 degree angle. I haven't resharpened yet since last week when I put on the 30 degree bevel, and it still shaves after daily use in the kitchen-veggies-meat, newsprint - low-brow stuff, but still.
