Ever get tired of being an accumulator?

All of my cutting needs could be handled by one S-curved or hawkbilled and one straight-edged or belly-edged ClipIt or fixed blade, but I feel compelled to keep buying ClipIts with FRN, G10, and metal handles in various blade styles. It gets to be a bit frustrating after a while.

For instance, my folder needs could easily be met with a Delica and a Meerkat, yet I just had to have the Native, Salbenza (ATR), Chinook II, Calypso Jr., Salsa, Dodo, and Merlin. Then there's the bunch on my want list. The FRN models are fairly indestructible and the G10, aluminum, and titanium scaled ones are even moreso. With as close to proper use as I can muster, any and every of these knives can easily last two lifetimes.

I don't want to stop buying and using my Spyderliscious ClipIts, but I must admit my compulsion to keep buying them is ridiculous. Well, not as ridiculous as compulsively buying lesser knives, but still silly.

Now if someone could buy some of my off-brand wares, I could get me that Yojimbo, Spyderfly, Ronin, and black Salsa I've been eyeing. The Goddard, too, if I really shake out the knife drawer.

Hey, man...think of yourself as more of an art-collector.

The art-factor is the only way I've found to justify having more knives than is absolutely neccessary...just because someone has a lot of "art" doesn't mean they are obligated to use/carry it all...at 1nce.

Using/carrying the art is fun too, though, isn't it.

Thanks, DB! Never thought of it that way.

Now I'm totally doomed! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Thom

The problem is that they are all so beautiful, well made and useful at the same time!

I tried to restrict myself to buying only the Spydies I really like. That, unfortunately doesn't work too well because I can't seem to find many that don't appeal to me.

Just go with the flow and hope that your wanted model list is complete before your cash is completely exhausted.

Regards Ken

Thom,

I sure know what you mean. I often think the same thing about my obsession. I have begun to try and convince myself however, that there are a lot of far more "destructive" distractions that I could be spending my disposable income on. So far, this has been working for me.

Be well, fellow Spyderenthusiast, and best wishes. Jeff/1911.

I am pretty new to knives and spyderco in general. I have always been more of a gun man. I saw my fathers endura and loved it......Next thing I know I have over 30 different spydies. Each time I promise myself this is the last one......Then a very good deal will pop up on the forums( just got a titanium bob lum tanto folder!). I justify this by telling myself.....If I don't like it(yeah right!) I can resell it! Well, I have resold a few....but for the most part they all remain. Do I need 30+ spydies.......Heck no!!! But like others on this board I figure it like this, I don't drink, smoke, or do any drugs, so why not! My wife has her obsessions with shoes and purses.....mine are cz pistols and spyderco's. I REALLY do feel as though my spydie buying days are pretty much over...the only other model that really appeals to me is the atr. (There I go again) I guess I can be thankful that spydies are very affordable and don't damage the bank account too much! Well, Good luck everyone with their obsessions, Mike

Hey, Thom,
I was always buying knives to fine THE PERFECT KNIFE. Oh well since then I have come to realize, there is no such thing, so I simply continue to buy knives that I like :-). Even better, I don't feel bad anymore that I haven't found the perfect knife.

But I share your sentiment. I don't like to see knives collecting dust in a drawer, so I look for people among family and friends that I can give a knive that I like as a present. This keeps my collection small, the knives get used, I get to handle them all and try them out, and it spreads the joy <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>.

Just got 4 more <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s in the mail from a trade. Must say....NOPE, never get tired of being an accumulator. I have no other hobbies so this is as good as any. Think I will be sticking to Spyderco's, after dabbling with some customs and a Strider it is really hard to justify the price. Plus I have always been <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> collector so I might as well stay with what I have the most of. Take Care and keep on buying those <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

"Too many" knives? LOL, there ain't no such thing!! :-)

I love having many knives, it gives me a lot of choices to choose from. Sometimes I just get them all out and lust over them. Knives, as a gentleman brought up earlier, are artwork to most of us, myself included.

For the longest time, I was mostly a gun man. Still am, of course. But lately, it's been knives that are my real passion.

I don't have that many knives, but even so, I seldom carry them, except for the SE Delica which is the EDC. But I like having them in the drawer and from time to time, taking them out for inspection and maintenance <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Now and then, one gets in the pocket for a brief period of time <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Aloha thombrogan,

Man, I know what ya mean. I try to justify my addiction by telling myself," My daughter will have a great collection when the time comes!" So far, it's been working.

Point blank: I do not need all the knives I have. Like you, I can get away w/ my Delica for all my cutting chores. The "lesser knives" I buy, I give myself the excuse of "wondering" how they perform. LOL, no need for this, as they usually do not do anything more than my Delica could. (Unless it's a FB.)

Also, what gets me, is I see all these guys at my facility living happily w/ their S&W's and Frost knives! I can see the S&W's being okay, but Frost? Sheez...

As long as this addiction doesn't replace any of the neccesities in life, then I think it's all good.

Sometimes what gets me too is, that I'll NEVER know how a certain <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> will perform, unless I have 2 of them...you know, one to USE the other to GAWK at...*sigh*.

All I can say is Psalm 3:5 man.

Proverbs 16:3...Commit YOUR works to the LORD, and YOUR plans WILL succeed!

Stretch13? Was ist das?

Daywalker,

And I still need to get your knife and Alex's knife, too. Man! It <i>never </i> ends! All of my <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s are users. My gawkers are meant specifically for decoration/gawkenizing. The few that weren't were traded. Of course, being used, my non-Spydies hit a tumultuous plummet in resale value.

It's a learning experience. Learn to buy Spyderco and very few other high-end pieces. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I know what you mean, Thom,

Spydies are the main vice here but I think it’s a general degenerative personality trait I have that says I gotta have more of dat stuff.

I can only ride one bicycle but own 6. I have about three thousand marine shells and no beach to walk them on. Books number enough to fill a small municipal library – from the necessary <b>The Spyderco Story</b> to the macabre <b> Cannibalism: from Sacrifice to Survival</b>. Music and movies have created a storage crisis for all the CDs and DVDs. Even owned 6 Corvairs at on time.

It’s worse when you marry an accumulator of the opposite sex. Mrs. Java’s junk er…I mean…accoutrements match my pack-rat caches in both volume and sheer numbers – crafting stuff to choke a chain of Michaels: cooking toys from the normal to the single-use bizarre in quantities to make Martha Stewart blush, and cookbooks enough to break Betty Crocker’s back. Thank heavens she shares my lust for Spydies as does Java the Younger. I look around at the accumulation of "stuff" from 18 years together and have come to the realization that I need to move to a trailer park, slap a few of our pink flamingos on whatever space will be left on the lawn, and install about four of those steel storage barns to hold whatever won’t fit in the five or so cars (three of which will be propped on concrete blocks) we’ll have in the driveway and on the lawn. Minimalist living??? What the **** is that??

It scares me to think my first Extrema Ratio should arrive any day now. These guys are not cheap so I hope I can control the desire to acquire.

Which Extrema Ratio did you buy?

Hey Thom,

First one is the Fulcrum FCN. Got it for a steal at $149.00. Unfortunately I'm already looking for a Nemisis and Col Moschin so the Fulcrum won't be lonely.

Excellent knives, all.

Still, if you have a Chinook II and then get a Nemesis/Faida or have a Nemesis and buy a Chinook II, you might not enjoy your Nemesis as much. Well, except as a precision-engineered chopper with a stilletto-inspired drop point. I've cut portions of my lawn with Nemesis and, aside from looking foolish, it was lots of fun.

ER's folders are the reverse version of the Stryderco concept. They have the lock strength of a Spyderco and they have the old thick sabre grinds Strider abandoned for flat grinds. The handles are very cool because they're smooth yet very secure.

Still, for the money, get three Chinook II's (one for each of the Java family). <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
