how tuff is D-2 to sharpen, compared to say s30v?

I'd rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6

You had to ask me eh??? I hate it, I have a Lightfoot that I have had a terrible time with sharpening. I can not get it to shave hair. S30V, I have had no problems with. SNG and Dodo have both been sharpened with no problem. I thik D-2 is definetly love/hate. Sorry I was not much help Take Care

From what I've heard, D-2 is crap 80% of the time because of poor heat treat or/and because can't sharpen that well. However, customs like Bob Dozier's are supposed to give exceptionnal performance to the experienced man. It is definitly a love-hate situation though. Unless you really know what you're doing, I wouldn't recommand it.

It's harder than S30V and more wear-resistant that M2. It'll sharpen up easily, but won't reprofile too well without diamonds or stronger methods.

The reward, as with S90V, M2 or cryo-quenched S30V and ATS-34 in the RC 60-62 range, is that you can have it take narrower angles with less trouble than softer steels.

Dozier's D2 sharpens up just fine with a sharpmaker.

With a good heat treat it takes me about 1/3 more sharpening to get the same edge. The great thing is it last about 1/3 longer! It's really not that bad. My next favorite steel to 30V! RKBA!

I'll disagree with Jimmy_Dean on this one. I have a half-dozen knives in D2, and have never experienced the problems he mentions. It takes longer to sharpen, true, but it holds an edge infinitely better than 90% of the stuff out there.
