Which is sharpest?

#1

Post by Zeppelin »

Do you folks believe any one particular spyderco is sharper than the others straight out of the box? I know I always see a lot of "I got a new _____ today, and it cuts like a demon" on here, so are they all the same or do you believe any one is better than another?

There's been a lot of raving on the forums about the sharpness of the gray Calypso Juniors. My personal pick for the sharpest out-of-the-box Spydie is a Moran drop point a co-worker ordered. A bunch of us ordered together and had the Spyder package from New Graham delivered to the workplace. When it came in the mail he stroked it down his forearm in a shaving motion. It literally skinned him. He didn't realize it until little spots of blood appeared. Those blood spots just sort of "grew" out of his arm. It was freaky to watch.

I don't know, the Spydies that have past through my hands (in complete over time: Calypso Jr., Dragonfly, Lil'T, Delica, Lum Chinese, Native II, and Spydercard) seemed all pretty much equal in sharpness right out of the box. However, I noticed, comparing the Dragonfly, Lil'T and Calypso (all full flat), that the blade grind (primary grid) or however you want to call it the one that goes, in a full flat grind, from the spine to edge is different on different models. In the Calypso it is taken to almost zero edge, meaning the actual edge bevel is very small, while on the Lil'T the edge bevel is much larger. That means that the blade of the Lil'T is thicker right behind the edge and has to displace more material and may seem less sharp when cutting something like cardboard, even though the edge itself is probalby equally acute. This is the same reason why a full flat grind usually appears sharper than a saber grid.

Aloha Zepplin!

For me, it's been my CE MILITARY!!! Geez...I actually USED it on my Maui trip and it cut cardboard like it wasn't there!

Now, I'm not just saying this to be a part of the "Mili crowd" here...it is a FACT!

had a little incident with my Gunting few years back when i first got it. did that classic thing that you shouldn't do with a live G (those who know this please don't mention! it's really really embarassing)
anyhoo, that little incident more than convinced me that it was deadly sharp out of the box : )

hey aXed if it was "deadly sharp" how are you still posting? Just kidding, As har as my own personal experience my ATR is the sharpest I have used. I thought it was the Milie but the ATR surpassed it. Although most of my spydies are "used" before I buy them.

Our Military was, and I have since surpassed the factory edge. 30V is now hands down my favorite steel! RKBA!

If you want something sharp, try a GILLETE....
Sorry if I'm honest.

I wouldn't consider a Gillette overly sharp. Try a well stropped Dovo!

....and there was recently a post were a member of this forum refused the razor of a collegue and used his Calypso jr. instead!

Edited to fix the smiley but without much success.

My Dyad was probably the sharpest <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I've ever seen out of the box. Nice and thin, with excellent geometry.
