Is Delica Good for Lefties?

#1

Post by FricFrac »

Hi, I'm considering buying the Delica SS model. I'm a lefty and would like to know if this knife is suitable for a lefty. What exactly does the "tip-up/tip-down" attribute mean? Does this mean the knife is ambidextrious?

Thanks!

ps can anyone recommend good lefty spydercos?

The FRN Delica is lefty friendly and is configured for tip-up only.

The SS version's clip cannot be swapped for leftys but can be mounted for either tip up or tip down carry.

I'm sure thats pretty confusing but someone will chime in here with an easier to understand explanation than what I just said.

Welcome FricFrac.

What BOK just said is that the clip can be put on in 4 ways, on either side of the handle (this makes it ambidextrous, can be used with either hand), and for tip up or tip down carry. Now tip up means that when the knife is in your pocket it the tip is up, and tip down means that it is down. Thus, there are four different combinations:
left handed tip down
left handed tip up
right handed tip down
right handed tip up.

hope this helps,

jaids

As a fellow lefty, I want to chime in here.

Although Spyderco's with left-handed clips are most comfortable, I get along great with a wide variety of right-handed Spyderco's, as long as there is left-handed access to the opening hole and carry in my left pocket/waistband isn't uncomfortable.

The absolute best Left-handed Spyderco's, in the Delica class are:
Delica FRN
Native FRN
Calypso jr.(highly recommended!)
Kiwi (no clip)
Dragonfly SS (without the clip)

My site features all of these knives, so you can take a closer look, if you like.

Welcome to the forum FricFrac. I'd pretty much agree with Mr. Blonde's views, would add that the Native II is another good choice and is the only ambidextrous SS handled Spydie. If you really want a Delica, you might consider hunting around for one of the left hand Carbon Fiber ones, they can be set up for either tip up or tip down left hand carry. A bit pricey, but truly left hand friendly. Finally, if you decide to buy the SS one, and do find the "wrong side" clip to be inconvenient, there's always the option of sending it off to our fellow forumite <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/joyce43_c/RONS ... bel1957</A> who can remount the clip for your choice of tip up or tip down carry on the "sinister" side for you.

Picture below shows the LH CF Delica, set up for tip down carry, and the FRN version set up for LH tip up carry. The "other" one, while totally ambi by virtue of being clipless, is probably not the most sensible choice for EDC. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
