Short lived models

Post by Jimmy_Dean »

Good morning folks,

I don't know it too many people are worried about these things but everytime I buy and like a product, I have this incredible fear that the company might stop producing it for some reason. Just to give you an example, I bought a huge quantity of pencils over the years because I fear one day people will think they're old fashioned and useless since we use computers so much and so and so. I want my children (when I have some) to write with pencils so I have plenty for them to use. Well we know pencils have been around for ever and probably will be for a very long time but that's the kind of insecure guy I am. And while it's possible that spyderco will be around for many years to come, I can't help but notice the number of models that have come and gone. And some were very good, in the hunting departement for example, but they get the discontinued after a while anyway.

Or at one point, I was interested by a Bob Lum Tanto fixed blade and a SpydeRench while going through their 2003 catalog and before I could find a dealer that could get one, they were gone. So my question is this: Is it possible that Spyderco decides that the Endura is no longer needed since they already have the Military and it works very well or stuff like that. After many years of using my Endura, I'll want to replace it by another one, not a different model, and again, I'd like my boy to have one in his pocket when we go camping, as his first Spyderco, like I did. Am I worrying too much or should I buy 5 of each model I like right now in case they disapear?

Don't worry, for most models you can allways find one if you want one.Might have to pay a bit more but they will be there.

Dean,
I don't think you should worry. Most of the time an improved variation of a knife will replace the older one. Ex. Impala, Wegner to me both hunting style blades. Also like Jeff stated you will still be able to find any that were made in quantities. I can still find a new CE Wegner today if I really wanted another one. My other point would be if you'd like your sire to carry a specific model then buy one of them now. I can't imagine what the choices will be in 10, 20, 30 ... years.

Just buy one of each model and each variation and you'll be fine.

I must admit I feel the same way as Jimmy_Dean when it comes to Spydercos. I am still upset that Spyderco discontinued the Lum Chinese Folder. It is still my personal favorite of the Spyderco lineup.

Yeah, I know that I could always find any model I want on ebay but, in my opinion, when they stop being produced, they become like collectibles and I wouldn't dare to use it too hard. But I get the idea, I'll always find something in their line-up to please me. I just hope that the ones that have been produced for many years will still be in 20 years.

Does anyone know why they put an end to the SpydeRench project by the way? Maybe it didn't sell as good as they hoped but I think Spyderco has a big enough share of the market to stick to a great design and wait for it to blossom.

From my observation, most models which are discountinued have yielded low-sales. But look on the brighter side of things, for each <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> which is taken out of the equation, a new and better one will replace it.. cool!

Hi Jimmy_Dean.

Sales usually govern longevity. We have many new models in the pipe (usually 15 - 25). The slower moving models are usually disco'd to make room for the new ones.

In the case of the Rench, our vendors went belly up. There were a great deal of mfg problems so we elected not to continue with current tooling. New tooling is being worked on. We didn't have enough in process to keep them in the catalog. One day, we hope to bring it back.
