Take an isoceles triangle with two edges at 85 degrees and one at 10 degrees. Hone them so that they're equally keen. Which of the three edges would you least like to have dropped on your finger? That's the difference between sharpness and cutting ability
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Are the thinner Striders as indestructible? The flat grind has to hurt some in that department. Cutting ability has to mean it is less of a good prybar right?

Shards of Narsil,

The thinner Striders are easier to break than the thicker Striders (though I doubt it would ever be "easy&quot<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> for exactly the reason you mentioned. A thicker edged knife has to push what it's cutting out to the sides more than a thinner-edged knife. But without that extra material, it can't be as strong (assuming that the materials and their heat-treatment are equal).

On thinking about it the new Manix may just be this knife that we are thinking of.

Yes, the SnG, MFS, and AR each have blades that are a bit thinner than many other Striders.

I imagine they'd be a tad easier to break, though still not very easy. The flat grind is likely one of the most durable, efficient grinds that can be had for a blade.

That'd be a well-sharpened khukuri. But for folders, something that can cut silk and small iron ingots should be ok.

Performance does have its parameters.

I've noticed the new Striders seem to have learned much from models like the Native, Calypso and Temperance models.

But it is also no surprize. Mick has mentioned to me how much Spyderco has influenced their company and designs. Told as a compliment.

I imagine there are more than a few knife companies that have been influenced by Spyderco, as well as other companies or dedsigners.

IMO Spyderco already makes a "Strider-ish" knife. (by that I mean, tank-like heavy duty build).

It's the Lil'Temperance. I have a couple of Strider SNG's and if anything, the Lil' T feels more overbuilt than the SNGs. (thicker, slightly heavier). I would seriously doubt that the Lil'T would be any weaker than a SNG in any parameter of performance.

(as a side note the SNGs remind me of Natives).

Cutting performance is similar as they both possess 4mm thick, flat ground S30V blades.

The Manix sounds like it would be a good competitor to the AR.

Hey, Cool, thanks for the comparison pics! As you said, all three together look fairly similar, at least from above. I've never seen all three together for a side view yet.

Sal, it's great to hear that you and Mick communicate! I'm always happy to hear about two great knife companies exchanging knowledge (and compliments!).

I think the idea of hybrids (crosses between Striders and Spydercos) could definitely be beneficial. Both companies have the advantage of presidents that have open minds.
