OT - New Orleans Visit

#1

Post by chad504 »

I'm headed down there, in late June, for a seminar. Any pointers as to what knives are legal (and NOT) and any good knifeshops to visit? None around here, in Southern Indiana...

you lucky dog, I've been wanting to check New Orleans out for some time. Make sure your knife is shaped like a cross:p. I would like to check out NOLA and some of the clubs out there.

Bladeforums.com has some links to state knife laws. Lousiana weapons laws, as I recall, are very non-restrictive except for switchblades, BUT please do your own research so you will be comfortable with your decision. Another source of links to weapons laws is www.packing.org .

Switchblades are illegal but there is store in a suburb boardering New Orleans, Metarie that even advertises switchblades in the phone book. Its called Alpine Jewelery (they started out selling jewelery and still do) and they claim to stock over 5000 knives. They do have a very large selection at good prices for a brick and mortar store. They will sell you a switchblade if you sign a form stating you are a collector and that the knife will not be taken out of your home.

As far as legality of pocket knives there are no laws in New Orleans. However, if you are caught do anything illegal you could be charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

There are no laws prohibiting what you carry but as stated in a previous post: doing anything illegal will get you in trouble. Just be polite and courteous to any LEO you may encounter because some don't have a sense of humor. There is a Remington store in the Riverwalk downtown by the Morial Convention Center and if you check the Yellow Pages you can probably find some other stores in suburbs: Kenner, Metairie, etc. Originally from the Big Easy so have fun and stay safe.

Definently check out Alpine while you are in N.O. I try to wander through there every few months and they always have an amazing collection of toys.

New Orleans cops are pretty much like any big city cops. They will find something to bust you for if you get them annoyed, but most of the time if you don't act stupid they could care less about what is in your pockets. I spent a week down on Bourbon Street for work last year, and wandered all around into the various bars and restaurants and never had any questions or trouble. I have heard that a few of the bigger nightclubs have metal detectors, but I never actually saw any.

Be advised that if you go visit the Museum of Art over at City Park, they will make you check your knives at the door (no BS about being illegal or confiscated; they just won't let you bring them in).

chad504, may I ask what seminar you will be in town for. I will be at a AAMVA conference at the Hyatt in late June. Wonder if it was the same.
