Smoothest Spydie?

#1

Post by Luvbug »

Fellow Formites,

Inspired by the post comparing the relative merits of the Para and the Li'l T, I would like to pose the following question: Which Spydies is the smoothest opener?

I have a fairly limited (by this forum's standards, anyway) collection of bugs. It is as follows:

FRN Delica

FRN Endura

FRN Native (US)

Grey Calypso Jr.

FRN Jester

Santoku

In my limited experience, I find the Colorado, Earth Native to be the smoothest deployer. How does the Para compare? The Li'l T? Mili? Others?

I've handled A LOT of Spydies, but my Lil Temp is the smoothest by far! Very smooth and no blade play what so ever.

I've handled just about every current Spydie as well, and I'd have to agree with Ted on the Lil' Temp. Somehow, it's got that silky ball-bearing feel to it, even though as far as I know, it doesn't really have anything technically different about the pivot than any of the other compression lock models. (Mine feels so perfect that I haven't had the heart to disassemble it, so I'm not sure on that!) I'm guessing that it just must be something about the shape and weight of the blade coupled with very precise tolerances. In my experience, the Lil' Temp is also one of the more consistent Spyders in terms of build quality. I handled several of them before I finally got one, and they all had the same smooth feel with no bladeplay or grittiness...

3's a charm. Of all of mine the Lil' Temp is by far the smoothest. I judge all others by it. I'm trying to get my para to it's level. It's taking alot of my sample militec I may have to order some<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

For me it is the Viele. I don't know how Spiderco did it but in my opinion, none of the 40 some odd knives (mostly custom collaborations) in my collection can match it.

For me it's the Vesuvius on a liner style lock, and the Native & Native III on lock back style. RKBA!

Aloha luvbug!

Long time "no see"! Hope all has been well with you.

I agree w/ swede. My Ti-Herbst I got from a very good friend is the smoothest opening of all my spyders...VERY close second being my Vesuvius w/ blue shell inlay I got from yet another great pal o' mine. Third place goes to my Salsa...BTW from another pal, and these guys are all from "here". Cool!!!

God will put you over...if you let Him! John 14: 13,14...try it, it WORKS!

Liner lock <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> no question..Viele
My slicked up Crickets run a close 2nd <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Lockback <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Hard to beat the G-10 Police or Rookie IMHO.

FRN <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>...the 1 you use the most <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

In the long run it depends on washer wear, blade tension, humidity, cleaning ritual.
Oh and if you've discovered Miltech-1 or not yet <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>.

Smoothness achieved the ultimate expression in the Viele as told to me by the man who sold me the same Viele by claiming it opened a smoothly as his wife's legs. After handling the Viele, I had to agree up to a point (after all I couldn't admitt to knowing his wife that well). Sensuously, sexually smooth: that's the Viele. My Gunting and Dodo have to rank closely up there also. Both open easily using the Glesser Twist.

The smoothest that I have handled so far is an old 440v military a friend has. It's actually one of the smoothest knives I have felt period.
