Knife cleaning tips n tricks
Hi all
I thought since there has been posts on tips n tricks for posting, we can all give our lill secrets on what works for us on keeping our blades in good condition.
Heres my one, this is from a friend of mine who is a goldsmith, this is the mix they use for keeping their jewlery in good clean shape, I tried it on my spydercard that got some nasty stains on the metalwork and it was also developing some rust specs, this tooks care of it beuifully and made it shine like a mirror.
Fill a basin with warm water and your normal household dish cleaner, then add a small amount of amonia cleaner, not soo much that the smell will over power you though (1 cap full of amonia is enough).
Use a old toothbrush to lightly scrb your metalwork in this mix and see how she cleans up, afterwards I give my blades a good quailty oil (like your Militech) and thats it, I do notice that the amonia/dishwash mix works beutifully on G-10, shines up real good.
Give this a try on stuff like wedding rings with stones, it works wonders on my fiance's ring which is white gold with 2 diamonds and a sapphire.
Cheers

Aloha my friend!
For me, a pin, toothpick, a "vain" off one of my daughters Nerf Darts, and Militech1...
Normally, I run the "vain" inside the scales once, then when all is clear, again w/ Militech1 (IF SS that is.) Use the pin and toothpick to get into all them hard to reach areas..then a drop of Militech1 on the pivot and lock well. Good to go!
Sometimes an occasional wipe w/ Tuf-Cloth (Marine Grade)...
Casiopeia's ring sounds sweet my friend! God bless ya both!
Always,
Chad

Most of the time, I'll take a strike-anywhere match, sharpen it with my knife and clean the dust inside the handle, the locking surface and everything that has to be cleaned. Some oil of the blade and pivot and that's it. Since I use my knives for anything and everything, the blade tarnishes a bit from time to time so I put a bit of gunmetal polish to make it shine. That's pretty much it, put I'll try MaNcEr's tip next time to tell you how it worked.

Zippo lighter fluid works fine for cleaning off my Spydercos. Slicing through and wiping off with a lemon for some reason removes stuff that won't budge too.
Militec-1 on the pivot does fine for me, but I really ought to find a food safe option that is nearly as good since I use some of my knives occassionally for food prep...

A pipe cleaner with bristles and some "Dust Off" --compressed air in a jet-nozzle can used for PC's and electronics.I found a dozen aerosol cans of gage block cleaner at work, works fast and leaves a super thin flim for moving parts. (for knives that can't be disassembled)
Militech-1 oil or grease as a final product.

been using the side of my boot to clean tape gunk off the blade... really starting to cut up the rubber sole though.

I use Birchwood-Casey synthetic gun oil and a soft cloth to wipe down the blades in my knife collection, and also use it on my guns about once a year. My EDC (which is a Delica PE) gets nothing but an occassional sharpening and it hasn't failed me yet (except for pocket lint build-up in the lock). I think that Spydercos are made to be used and the pivot washers are the weak point. If they wear out, Spyderco will replace them. Other than that, the blades will dis-color in time without a protective covering of oil.
My theory is that if it is a collectable, care for it. If it is a user, use it!

swede / Dave,
Hey!! the secret is in the smell!!!
Hyuck, hyuck, Jokes apart i think it has something to do with the kind of cotton used in them. Egyptian cotton i presume? It's absorbs excess oil and leaves the blade and frn clean.
I find it useful.
Have a great day,
Kaizer.
