Your Inputs on Steel handle and grip question

#1

Post by Kaizer »

Hi people,

I had handled a friends folder which had aircraft aluminium handles. The immediate drawback i felt was the smoothness of the handle as i am used to volcano textured FRN a-la Spyderco. While handling it for protracted a longer duration of time, another problem emerged...sweaty palms and an unsure grip because of the slipping and sliding.

Question is: How would you deal with this situation. The obvious answer is to machine the handle or do some kinda mods on it so that the handle has some "teeth".

Maybe you folks having the S.S. knives of Spyderco (Police, etc) and having sweaty palms like me would be able to give your inputs as to how you tackled this problem.

Thanks in Advance.

Have a great day.

Kaizer

A friend of mine simply glued a thin piece of G-10 to the scales.
His work looks dreadful but I am sure it can be done in a precise way.

I also remember someone's suggestion to apply skater's grip tape to the handles, the kind that goes on top of the skateboard for better control.
This would be easiest to do I think.

Also, if you have access to a CNC machine, applying a crisscrossing pattern of grooves to the handle would be easy.
Or do some creative filework by hand, maybe just a few grooves to the edge of the scales?

Personally I'd go with the skater grip-tape because it's easy to do and, more importantly, to undo.
Also, it's a cheap solution to the problem.
Tell us what you chose!

Aloha kaizer!

I agree w/ silverback. try using some skateboard deck tape. In fact, I think that CKE suggested cutting some Spyderbugs outta deck tape...that'd be cool, but good luck...those Spyderbugs are hard to DRAW let alone cut out! LOL!

An interesting "solution" that my great friend Deacon came up with was to add the drying vent to their SS models. It does aid in grip, that's for sure...something i never really noticed until he pointed that out to me. Ahhh, the wisdom of the "ancients"...(KIDDING Paul!!!)

Like you, I'm enamoured w/ my FRN models. If I am in a "controlled environment"i.e. smooth tiled or carpeted floor, SS is not a prob for me. I kinda like the "heft". Other than that though, FRN for me!

Take care!

Two possible options:

1. Send it SC_Rebel and ask him to 'fix' it.

2. If it's an Extrema Ratio folder, seek psychiatric help (the handles are smooth, but more secure than many deeply textured handles; hence the need for a headshrinker).

Thanks Thom, Kaizer there are many ways to deal with the SS/Almite slick scales.
Here are a few.
More pics on my page, which has been recently updated with tons of new stuff. thanks, Ron

Hi Kaizer,
Speaking of SS knives, I think they are more aesthetical than functional. I by far preffer the FRN over SS due to its lightweight and improved grip.
The common solution Spyderco provide is the Kraton inserts - see the Pro Grip, the Spur or the Everest. Or, as they did to the ATR, some holes in those Ti handles also improve grip and allow certain indexing maneuvers.
However, I imagined one or two SS folders myself and I added either some cutouts or drying vents in the handles (see the SS Raptor) or I profiled the handles to provide more grooves (somehow the way Eric Glesser did to the Scorpius).
Other solutions I know of are cutting a crosshatch texturing or bonding some tiny scraps of metal (like at those diamond files). The disadvantage is that the handles can no longer be engraved and may have an unappealing look.
I didn't count here attaching CF or G-10 scales, or even grip tape, because IMO there won't be SS handles anymore, but rather SS liners.
