The "Q" model, info needed.

#1

Post by Ignacio49 »

Hi.

I am new to knifes, and just started learning about it.

I was offered a Spyderco "Q" model (the one with the SPIDER) NIB for $73.

My questions:

- Is the one with the spider the cheapest of the "Q" models? Is $73 a good deal - what is the approx current price?

- Finally, I was also offered NIB one "Snap It" and one "Moky" models. What are reasonable prices for these models?

Appreciate your good help and comments.

Regards,

Ignacio

Hi Ignacio and welcome to the Forum!

The Q isn't my special favorite, but I'll just lay out what I know.

Yes, I think the Q with the Spyder is the commonest, especially with serrated edge (the PE is worth a slight premium).

I have:

Black W/spyder SE paid $40. in 1999.
Black w/ US Flag SE paid 55.
Black solid blade SE paid 50.
Green w/spyder PE #003 paid 75.
Gray w/spyder PE #003 paid 75.

Haven't bought one in 3 years. The prices are too high. I think these are collectible because there are so many variations and no production numbers, so you might be getting a knife with a total of 25 made, or 2500. Who knows?

Anyway, your deal sounds very fair at $73.
I don't have a Snap-it but Ebay has them between $30-35. Moki made some fine knives way back when. They also made some cheap Zytel handled models that sell pretty cheap. I'm no expert here.

Hope this helps a bit.

Aloha and welcome!

Price for NIB Q bug is pretty good as I have heard they go for about 90$ and up on ebay. I think the Qbug is the standard Q, so it should be the "cheapest" Q if there is such a thing nowadays!

Don't know about the prices for a Moki or a Snap It, but I can tell you I have a SE Snap it and it is a great knife for times when you want a more secure carry than clipping. It is very flat and the blade is quite broad!

Ye I got my paws on DayWalkers "Q" model.
THe spyder model may be the most common but I reckon it is really stunning.

Well worth the cash if you ask me.

Cheers

Ignacio49,
The price definitely sounds fair. The Q's are definitely in the collectable category these days. The Spyde SE is the most common, it's also one of the more desirable ones too. Many people don't take to all the different designs and variations.
If you'd like to see a few more check out http://home.comcast.net/~boxer93/q2.html
Swede, I didn't know they offered colored handled Q's with collector numbers. Even I can learn something new with Q's. Nice catch.

Chris,

This was a pair I picked up at SFO. The #003's used to belong to a guy who worked there, but he sold a lot of them to me, outside the company. I didn't think the 5-knife sets were numbered either. Maybe these 2 were prototypes or something.. dunno.

hey there

I have two Q's. One is a collector's #14 that i actually paid 200 bucks for on Ebay and the other is Mancer's knife that I am holding hostage till after the wedding. I think 73 dollars is a heck of a deal...go for it

Thank you all for the good info.
In a couple of hours I will be getting the "Q". Maybe this is the starting of a new hobby for me.
All the best,
Ignacio

Hi again.
I am now the happy owner of a "Q" model, the "basic" one (serrated, with the spider).
A couple of other models at the store caught my attention (I am looking for light weight, among other things). These were the Rescue Jr. and the Calipso Jr., both with plastic handle. What are fair prices for these models? - Also, is there anything I should look at or be aware of?
Thnks for your help.

Right on Ignacio! A rarity indeed.

Hey ya Mancer and Casi! Mancer my poor fellow...now, is that Q worth an eternity of giving up the "I life" ( as it will no longer be "just you" anymore), sharing an eternity w/ one who will put up w/ you no matter what, an eternity placing orders for Spydies, hearing forever someone saying as you leave the house, "Don't forget your CIVILIAN!"...**** RIGHT IT IS BROTHER! Boy, you sure did this right Mancer, scored TWO unique and rare "pieces"! Take care you 2!

God will put you over...if you let Him! John 14: 13,14...try it, it WORKS!

All I can say Mancer is that posession is 100% of the law here as those knives along with three others are safely tucked away in Utah and you are in South Africa good luck with that *runs*
