Spydie injured in line of duty....

#1

Post by JBE »

My last shift I ran a MVC (Motor Vehicle Collision) and we had to extricate an individual who was caught in the driver's seat of an SUV that had rolled over onto its side. I used a LEO's ASP baton to shatter the back glass to gain vehicle interior access. The gasket that surrounds the window started to come off for some reason and had to be cut away as there was still some glass protruding from it. The deputy who was there with me attempted to cut the gasket with a Gerber EZ-Out but no dice. I used my PE Millie to cut through the gasket but low and behold there were still some glass fragments hidden inside! Anyway, I was able to cut through the gasket and access the patient, who was then rapidly extricated out of the vehicle. A happy ending for my patient, but not such a happy one for me. The glass that was still inside the gasket has destroyed the edge on my 440V Millie. I have spent almost an hour on my Sharpmaker without any results. There are numerous small nicks in the edge now that I cannot get out. Looks like it will have to take a voyage home to Golden for a little TLC. Until then I will be EDC'ing my D'Allara Rescue.

Great story, Medic! I'm quite sure that the Golden crew will take good care of you, especially if you include a note telling them how your Millie got injured! Seems that Sal thrives on hearing real-world accounts like these for R&D purposes...

Hey Medic,

Great Job man! Are you alright? Did you hurt yourself in the process?

Blades can be always be replaced...

Have a great day,
Kaizer.

Thanks guys! This is a mostly thankless job so I appreciate the props! Funny thing is most of the time my Millie was used for mundane chores such as opening boxes, food prep, etc...even at work. That rubber gasket was some tough stuff! Luckily, there was no injury to myself, and the person we removed from the vehicle is doing fine now. I'm just glad that I had such a high-quality tool that was able to accomplish the job where another one had failed!

Medic2110,

You dont have a serrated edge rescue for just these days?? Or did you just take along a plain edged blade instead of a serrated one?

Just curious to know..as I though the "Rescue" line of knives from (Rescue, D'allara, Assist etc) would be ideal for ya.

Thanks and have a great day,
Kaizer.

I do have a D'Allara rescue...but that PE Millie has been my EDC for so long I couldn't imagine carrying anything else! The PE has always done what was asked of it and then some! As I speak, I'm heading out the door for work and the D'Allara is clipped in my pocket (it will become my EDC until my Millie returns)

Medic, great job. For being willing to risk your life, not to mention your knife, you are without a doubt one of the good guys!

As for your blade...I'm certain that Spyderco will give you a new one or fix that blade for free. It would shock me a lot if they wouldn't.

Good work, sir.

I would advise against using 440V for that again, as 440V has an annoying habit of micro-shipping. I believe the Millie is now available in S30V, which solves that.
