Introduction and my Delica...

#1

Post by CDNCop »

Greetings all,

I'm a newbie to the forum. I recently sent an email to spyderco regarding the repair of my 1993 Delica. I thought I'd post it here to see if anyone has had similar repairs done:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I purchased my Spyderco Delica (plain blade) in 1993 and have been thrilled with it since day one. It's been across the country with me, throughout Europe and rides in the pocket of my body armour every day in my work as a Police Officer. I could not be happier with it.

Unfortunately about 2 years ago I lent my little workhorse to a family member who broke the tip off. He made it worse by grinding the broken end down and reshaping it to make it "useable". Needless to say I was not pleased. I've recently ordered a new Endura SpyderEdge to take its place as my primary knife for work.

What I would like to know, is if it would be possible for me to send my well loved Delica to your facility for a new blade and some TLC. As my Delica is over ten years old I am unsure whether this is feasible, but I would like to see my favorite little knife repaired and back in action. Of course I assume there are costs involved, but I believe it will be worth it.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Welcome fellow Canuck
For the price of a new one you could probably just buy another Delica. No it won't have the history of the old one but a lot more economical. I must admit I like the integral clip on the old models better than the new clips. Just a personal preference though. Hope you stay and enjoy the forum. Where abouts in Canada are you from??? Take Care!!!

*sigh*
You're right, a new one may be cheaper and make more sense in the end. But mine has "been there and back" so to speak. We'll have to see what it'll run me to repair it.

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.

Contact Mike Hayes in the Spyderco Warranty and Repair department. Mike is at Spyderco Monday- Friday 8-5 MST. You can reach him directly at

800-525-7770 X255
-or-
303-279-8383 X255
-or-
mhayes@spyderco.com

The telephone route is the best way. As I've said before, Mike doesn't seem to be an email kinda guy (but he's the best when it comes to repairing s)

I'm sure it can be professionally reground. A replacement blade likely won't be possible however since the knife is assembled using rivets. Mike can give you the word on repairs.

Aloha and welcome!

Ah, the Delica...AUS8, integrated clip. Love it but I prefer the steel clips. Yet, they don't quite feel as full as the integrated ones.

since she served you so well, I'd go and have her fixed if at all possible...I commend you on that!

Pray it all works out for ya!

CDNcop,

I have heard several stories about people who sent their "beloved" knives to Spyderco for repair, w/ disappointing results. Even though the knife was accompanied by a detailed note such as yours clearly explaining that they wanted to keep their old knife because it had sentimental value to them, they were simply sent a new, current style replacement in it's place.

Now of course this is great service if all you want is another knife, as in most cases the new version is at least a theoretical improvement over the older version - but it doesn't satisfy if the old knife had great value to the owner. As well, one such account reported how their knife had been broken during some form of stress testing, and was not returnable to the owner at all. YIKES!

My point here, is that Spyderco does provide very good customer service but you must be sure to explicit about your desire to keep the old knife, and make sure that they will definitely return it to you before you send it away. Good luck, and let us know here how you do with this.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911 - fellow AB Canuck

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum. The Delica is my very favorite knife. I just can't imagine significant improvements on this one
If your Delica has FRN handles, it's most likely they won't be able to replace the blade because the handles would get damaged while removing the old one.

*Update*

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome to the forum.

I heard back from Mike Hayes via email today and recieved what I assume is the standard form email reply for the "can you fix my knife..." question. Although I understand that the repair folks must recieve a ton of email each day, I was hoping for a little more detailed response than what is on the web site.

Given that the value of the knife is mostly sentimental, I think I'll take the advice of 4s ter and see if I can find a place to have it professionally reground- rather than risk having it tossed if it is deemed beyond repair.

Thanks again to all for the warm welcome and the input.

Cheers,
CDNCop

The best professional regrinding for a Spyderco is done by Mike Hayes @ Spyderco - probably the cheapest too.

The best way to get info from Mike is to call him. I'm sure he's probably grimacing a bit at me suggesting everyone phone him - although I've never seen any sign that he visits this Forum (maybe Sal or Joyce can tell him )

Having your old, worn, unsafe (but sentimentally valuable) knife replaced with a new one due to safety issues is, as Jeff mentions, a possibility. It depends on what you can accept. Although some people don't want to risk losing a particular knife, Spyderco's interest in safety is one I can understand. Sometimes, if a knife has given you good service, it's just becomes time to retire it and buy a new, safer replacement.

CDNCop -

This may sound foolish, but let Mike know
Al Treat said to "do his thing" ( he'll
know what I mean ) See, if the knife
wasn't abused, then has to fix it ( a
good chance they can ) or replace it...

It's just a matter of sending it to Mike @ warranty & repair with $10 for the return postage. Don't be mislead - Mike's a miracle
worker, and I'm sure he'll "do the do" and
your Delica'll be 100%. Just send it to -

Spyderco
warranty & repair
820 Spyderco Way
Golden, CO 80403
U.S.A.
ATTN : Mike Hayes

And let him know Al Treat sent you.

Under such circumstances, WELCOME ABOARD!

BTW - If you're in the market for a new
Delica sometime down the road - BestKnives.com has'em for $39.95U.S. and
Mike ( another one! ) @ BestKnives ships
anywhere. Give him a call about 10AM EST -

1-(800)-956-5696

I think you stand a better chance with Mike
Hayes repairing the blade, or replacing the
knife. But BestKnives has about the best
service & price going ( he even specializes
in dealing with military & Law Enforcement -
send him your order ( when ( and if ) you
do on your dept.'s letterhead )

Thank you to all for your great input- I can see that there are some truly good folks on this forum (a rare find these days)

I've been convinced and the delica will make a trip to Spyderco HQ so mike can work his magic.

Thanks for the great info on purchasing other knives Al- in fact at the same time I ordered my Endura I ordered 4 Stainless Spyderedge Delica's as gifts. Hopefully the folks I give them to will enjoy theirs as much as I've enjoyed mine.

Actually my Delica rode with me last night during the night shift I just finished. Speaking of which, time to hit the sack.

Thanks again everyone.
