My choice - SOG

I like that military styling & "SOG assist"

Also the favor to dagger blades ( PE II, etc.) and the "arc lock".

What say the augurers?

I've got an SOG Flash II. The assisted opening is kind of fun, but after a while the knife gets a lot a debris inside. I tried blowing it out with an air compressor but there's still some. I wrote to SOG and asked if I could take it apart but no, that would void the warranty.

My friend had an Endura, and after 10 days of backpacking and heavy use, it was clear it was a lot better knife. Sometimes my Flash opens if I just drop it on the ground, which makes me paranoid it's going to open in my pocket, which makes me keep the safety on, which slows down opening. Just another reason the round hole rules!

Aloha AET!

Hmmm, I like some of the SOG line, but I like Kershaw and CRKT's...only thing is for some reason, their steel rusts very easily where I live.

BTW-dantecubit...I dropped my Chive and boy did this lil' guy pop open! Spooky thought about your SOG opening in pocket isn't it? I had the experience of my BM Stryker opening as I was putting it back into my pocket, left a huge slash in my jeans. (Thank God it was my jeans ONLY!)

I'd have to say Benchmade. Cold Steel's a somewhat distant third, IMO. (Yes, I know I used to think a lot more of them, but it's amazing what a bad experience with customer service will do for one's perception of a company.)

But, <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s my favorite - that "hole", clip
and those <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>serrations! Sal & co. were really thinking waaayy back in '82'! Add
FRN, G-10, and those redical locking designs, and you HAVE the "industry standard"!!! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, second to NONE!!!!

It's an embarassing question on this forum. I'd have to answer that for me it's Cold Steel. I don't really like Lynn Thompson or his philosophie but I do like their knives, and that's why I pay for. As for bad service, I can't comment on that since I never had a problem, but it certainly hurts one's image when something like that happens.

I don't have too many non spydies, a Kershaw Chive, a CRKT Rollock and a Delta Z. All of them are interesting and neat made. Yet, Spydies remain my primary choice (maybe I should try a Benchmade someday, but the only one I like is the Mini AFCK - that hole isn't that oval, after all<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>).
There are, of course, other brands that make fine knives. I like the MT Vector, Kestrel and Scarab. I also like the MoD Ladyhawk and Mini CQD. But as I stated before, if I were to pick, I'd go for Spydies, hands down <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

For me, Spydies rule.

But for second place, I still like Paul Knives (both the old and new Gerber series). They're the only others I collect now.

Here's my thought. While Spyderco may have complex and varied designs, they are really quite simple and elegant on the inside. Sal has made the best folders of the fewest parts necessary. By contrast, Mr. Poehlmann, being an engineer, made Pauls with amazing simplicity on the outside, but with lots of complexities and parts on the inside. I guess that's why they were discontinued by Gerber. Cost too much to make. So I think both are minimalist and elegant in their own way. I am drawn to both.

BTW, does anyone out there have a Paul Knife?

Al Mar was a great man, he brought us great knives. Gary Fadden is decent, honest man bringing us the excellent old line products at the highest quality. Kirk Rexroat is a personal friend and designing for Al Mar. Kirk is a very fine man, excellent steel and knifemaker, and has a lot of design talent exemplified by all the awards his work has won. Like Spyderco Al Mar brings their vision to the table with integrity. When you buy a knife from Spyderco or Al Mar you get more than the knife. With all the coyotes in the industry it is nice to buy from fair, hardworking, honest people of principle.

Vintage AL MAR. The last non-Spyderco knife I owned was a SERE II with Micarta scales.

Oh Swede - You read my lips!
The Paul knife is a vintage jewel as no other production knife is. I also like the Lone Wolf Bob Loveless series. Unfortunately it has been released 25 yaers too late. An other thing is, in real Bob has never made folders. So what are these knives?? Are they the real Mcoy, the genuine Loveless folder (made in Italy)????

Clipits work!

BENCHMADE! The 805 TSEK is my all-time favorite folder...So much so that I recently traded for another one...Now I have a pair of 'em. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

(Yes, I like the BM 805 even more than my beloved SS SE Police model, as the 805 is TOTALLY "lefty-friendly", where the SS Police model isn't.).
