How Often do you sharpen your ?

Post by Kaizer »

Hi all,

Just how often do you sharpen your *Spyderco Knife*? Do you do regular "touch ups" even though your Spydie just sits there on the shelf? I understand that i would depend on periodicity and severity of useage.

Have a great day,

Kaizer.

Hi Kaizer,
I have 2 tests: the "thumbnail catch" and the "tugging on the back of the hair." If the knife fails either test then I will touch it up. For my plain edge kitchen knives I will steel them just about every time I use them.

I sharpen my knives usually once a week, or whenever necessary. For Spydies, I use the "hair on the forearm test", while on the kitchen knives I only give them an utility edge (coarser), therefore I just need them to cut.

Ahhh, once again i follow Dialex! (Howzit brother!)

Anyway, yes, depending on the amount of use that particular day, I'll touch up whatever Spyder was used. For example, did a screen replacement on my back door, only had my Dragonfly FRN PE...boy, did cutting screen do a number on the edge. Used my Sharpmaker, and it "came back to life".

GENERALLY, I only sharpen once every few weeks. Cardboard, tape, envelopes, "blister packaging" don't stand a chance against my CE Delica!

If the edge touches anything during the day, it gets retouched on the stones that evening and the "cutting edges" left moist with a light machine oil or fp-10.

Why leave them moist with oil?
Slow oxidation will turn a scary sharp blade to just sharp in a few weeks. The oil keeps the air of the edge so it's razor and "good to go" until it's used again.

I usually touch up my knife with a few passes on the white stones once a week, but obviously I'll do it more if I use it more. As we all know, a sharp edge is a safe edge

For me the paper test. I can live with an EDC not shaving, but if it so much as snags cutting paper (news magazine). It gets touched up. My kitchen knives on the other hand are a different thing: if I don't scare myself touching the blade, it needs work. Only my kitchen knives get oiled after use and sharpening (mostly not stainless). Use CVS mineral oil for the blade. Oil must be compatible with food which eliminates all the high tech stuff and I am too cheap to spring for Camellia oil (well maybe some time). Use my japanese kitchen knives on an end grain board only, greatly increases edge retention.

Well my EDC Endura is in BIG need for a 204'ing. I (winces)pulled some staples out of the baseboard that was holding a defunct telephone line with the tip. It needs some TLC soon. It was a wedding gift so I always carry it but hate kowing I have a dull knife on me.
For EDC's usually like to keep them sharp. Before they get sharpened they are usually sharp enough to cut paper with a bit of drag. I carry two EDC's so oneis always hair poppin though. Good Q was thinking of asking it myself and you beat me to it. Take Care!!!

And how often do you back-bevel? My Cricket is still relatively new so there's no need for that right now but the time will come.

My police model is in a rotation, so i have it on me every other week or so, but i perodicly inspect the edge. I touch it up using my leather belt even when I haven't used it. otherwise, after a week of carrying it I run it across the whites a few times.

Daily. Mine is used a lot from pulling staples to opening sample bags, and oh... don't forget lunch. Sometimes I cut things I shouldn't. I touch it up almost every night using a white 204.

i sharpen my my knives when they dull, for my kitchen knives when they will no longer cut soft tomatoes like butter and my spyderco when they wont cut paper. but to start with i sharpen my knives be it kitchen or spyderco until the edge shines like a mirror using the three grades of spyerco whet stones this reduces the need to resharpen and helps in edge retension, get rid of the burr, also i have been using my f-dick super fine steel to keep the edge on my latest purchase the lil temperance, which i spent about three hours getting the perfect edge on, and after about a month of use, mainly cardboard its not scary sharp but still cuts paper like its not even there

I sharpen when they won't cut what I want to cut. Be that food, paper, cardboard, seatbelt webbing, or poly rope.

Usually ends up every couple weeks on my EDCs. Quite often once a month or so I'll end up sharpening 4-5 EDCs at once. If the knife isn't sharp(paper or shaving) after the days work, I'll put it aside to sharpen when I have time unless I need to use it the next day. I strop after work every day, keeps my edges as sharp as I need em.

I check my edges as I pull em out of storage, usually put em away sharp, but I'm bound to put away a dull one if I'm cleaning up.
