Spyderco Lil' Temperance

Greetings,

Long time troller, First time poster

I just brought home one of these amazing knives, and let me post a first impression for your reading enjoyment (i know i like reading all of the reviews on this forum)

I have always liked knives alot, and about four years ago a friend of mine showed me a G-10 harpy, i went right out, and bought a serrated endura to replace a gerber i had carried for quite awhile. This was the best knife i ever handled, it cut like a dream, was lightweight, the clip was amazing, etc.... So i was sold, right? then i got a Pro-Grip lightweight 75/25 (i think thats right) this was also an amazing knife... but i ended up selling it to a friend so he could enjoy the magic of spyderco;, so today after lots of thought (and handling the Bob Lum, Chinook II, and the Carbon Fiber Delica) I got the Lil'. This is the creme' of the crop, no other knife has fit my hand so well, and cut so clean. Already i can index it into any position and it moves like one of my fine folded steel tantos. It's really amazing, i feel like i am carrying some kind of enchanted blade. It slides through the air with a real sense of purpose. It's leaf shape cuts better then almost any shaped blade I personally have used. My knives get used hard (not abused, i use the right tool for the job ), but i only carry one knive on me at a time, because i like to "memorize" the feel, and balance of the tool. Well i really treated my self, and must say once again, spyderco makes the BEST knives. Period. It's sitting on my strong (right)side along with a Ruger Single Six with Eagle mother of pearl grips, clipped, and on my left i have my Surefire e2e, so i feel pretty ready to go <cowboy action grin>.

Thanks,

badcow

Welcome to the Forum badevilcow! Nice to see you are posting. It is much more fun instead of just lurking. All input is GREAT I have wanted the Lil Temp for quite some time. I held the Rhino point and loved the handle but no the blade, so the leaf would be perfect. Looks to be a good user. Thanks for the review, I want one even more now. Take Care!!!

I've been carrying a 440V leaf Lil Temperance for a few weeks now. Just touched up the edge this afternoon as a matter of fact. I've done some serious cutting with it, along with the usual mundane tasks of course. That 440V is frustrating stuff to touch up (even with the Sharpmaker) because the edge loves to roll. Really frustrating. I've learned to settle for a *really minor* wire edge. The knife cuts like a laser but doesn't "feel" sharp.

Interesting knife. I'll get one in S30V soon. The overall design has a lot going for it.

Welcome to the Forum, Badevilcow!!!!!

Most excellent moniker but how will we separate you from the rest of the herd......all cows are bad and evil. They have a Gary Larsen type of sinister mystique about them - except for the mindless bovines lolling about in fields of green destined to become the Big Macs of tomorow - (or Mad Macs if they have BSE (mad cow disease)). Hope to see how you chose this name on the OT post regarding your Forum name. Sorry for the immediate thread drift......

The Lil Temperance is a most underated folder, IMO. She really does index well - just a cut below the Gunting and about as good her big brother, the Temperance. She's a great hard use blade that carries easy and is about as stout as the Chinook.

Nice wheel gun too. Started out with a Single - still have some powder imbedded in my forearm from unlearning bad TV habits. Check the fit of the magnum cylinder before stabilizing the Six on other body parts for firing. A little blow-by leaves dark memories. Great all around plinking pistol!

Typical java rambling - hope it doesn't deter you. Good to have ya aboard. May your Spydies be ever fruitful and multiply.....

Wow, Thanks for all the positive replys guys, and thank YOU Sal for the kind first reply, I feel very honored

Well, I've chosen to carry the Lil Tip up (it came from country knives tip down) because I feel i can draw a tip up smoother, and quicker. At first I thought i was losing a little indexing from having the drilled clip in the butt of my hand, no longer near the pointer and index finger, but after twirlling it around enough, i'm again impressed because EVERY part of the knife seems to be designed for positive grip in motion and my thumb seems to now" index the clip" which also works very well... hehehe who knew the handle of a knife could be/would be so thought out, the three dimples cut into the g-10 are a great thing.. okay enough ranting, i feel like i'm trying to seduce the **** thing on a dinner date or something really impressed.. hehehe later guys, thanks again
badcow

ps, Sal how do YOU and why do you personally carry the Lil ie. Tip up, or Tip down?, thank you in advance for any reply.

quick re-reply, after posting i looked at the lil sitting next to me, and i think i just realized that the three indexing holes on the clip line up with the three indexing holes drilled into the G-10 on the other side in both tip up, and tip down mode, which would mean that this puppy was designed to be just as controllable tip up, or down.. okay that is a really cool design feature, i guess i'll have to repost a mini personal review in a few months after i've had a few weeks using it out in the woods and fields 40 hours a week..heheheh thanks again spyderco forum...

I have been considering the Lil' Temp, and I would prefer a clip that would be kinder to my pocket. Does anyone have a good substitute clip for this excellent knife?

In my experience, the clip works just fine. Maybe Spyderco made newer Temp's a little more trouser friendly in the clip dept.

I really like the design of the clip, especially the looks, but I find that, although the clip is thicker than the standard Spyderco clip, it is not as stiff and especially not as "springy". I would wish the clip was more elastic and wouldn't bend as easily. Never had that problem with a regualar Spyderco clip.

I have a lil temp and wear slacks for work. The clip was no good for that style of pant so I took the clip off a CUDA Maxx, two of the holes line up, and hand filed the circular top of that clip to fit into the horseshoe shape resess of the temp. Works beutifully. I will try to post a pic.

Hello Badcow,a great post! I have the Lil' one also. A great knife. In jeans, it carries great in the watch pocket. Clip works there very well.
I was interested in your mention of Country Knives in Lancaster. A great place to do business. Finally broke down today and bought the ATR. It's a step up from the Lil' one and my other favorite, the Gunting. It's hard to believe it's a production knife!
