What folder for a "bad" situation would you want?

#1

Post by ajnova »

I was just thinking if you ended being in the middle of a "bad" situation which folder of any company would you want? I know many of you would say "rather have a fixed blade", but you didn't know you be in this situation - so you just have a EDC on you.

For me I don't really know... Currently I have only two, one hand openers. SOG Flash I (which is assisted anyway) and SOG Tomcat II. Tomcat II has a 3.75 blade and is heavy at about 8 ounces... I have small/really small hands and I can't open the Tomcat II all that fast, due to size and weight of it. I'm much faster if I grip it like normal with my right hand and grip the bottom with my left.

So I don't know if like Spyderco Military or ParaMilitary or Chinhook II would be best suited for me in a bad situation. As I don't know how fast I could open one of them... Though many of you say the SpyderHole is the best and maybe I could open faster with that, then with like a thumbstud.

Then I was thinking, what about like a Benchmade with AXIS lock - can be flicked open very fast. Or Emerson with Wave feature - when you pull it out of your pants it opens or something... So by the time you have pulled it out of your pants, the blade is already opened and locked.

I don't know which knife I'd pick. :-( I'll see how fast I am at opening my new Native and Calypso Jr. which should be here by the end of the week!!!

Also hopefully I'll never get into a "bad" situation anyway. Carried Swiss Army knifes for around probably 5 years and never was in a bad situation then.

So which folder would you pick? The idea is this, you got a EDC on you and your in a store or whatever and someone pulls out a knife or a baseball bat or something.

One situation I think of (which will never happen to me) is, I'm at the library and some punk comes in with a baseball bat mad for some reason. Not exactly targeting me, but maybe you go try to stop him before the Cops get there.

---

PS So yes, I did finally order my first Spyderco's! I hope they get here before the SuperBowl! I'm really looking forward to the SuperBowl and having my first Spydie's there would make it all the better!

Of the Spyderco folders I currently own, if I needed one to take the hardest of use, it would be the Lil' Temperance!

If inside a library, pick up a chair, and try to recruit helpers to also pick up chairs! Your mind is your primary weapon, and the environment can help you. Inside a store, are there shopping carts or baskets?Canned goods can be thrown. If it gets as far as needing a folder, my choice is my EDC, the Gunting. For smaller hands, the Dodo might work well, but I have seen some small women who do fine with the Gunting. I have medium hands, and find the Police too small for my taste, so a Police with G-10 handle scales might be good. Your SOG folders might do well, but I am not familiar with them. Lock strength is a major factor for me, as is grippy but not sticky handles, which is why I like G-10.

Hands down, I'd pick my Strider GB. The tanto blade is large and thick, and the lock is stronger than many fixed-blade knives, so it would be a no-brainer for me.

If I only had one of my Spydies, I'd pick my Native.

trust me... chairs hurt. I recieved an airborne chair in sept 01. Leg bottom to my front teeth.

Braces still then, or I'd have lost 6 teeth. As it was I spent a good deal of time in the chair getting re-alingned, and then at the cop shop for an hour, and finally 4hrs in the emerg room to find out I had a hairline fracture in lower right jaw, and THEN finally given a prescription for T3's. Had a choice of 2 months of soup, or getting wired. I'm sick of soup.

As to folder of choice when SHTF, something you're fully familiar with works best. I can use my calypso jr, ss dragonfly, and military without any second thought. Endura still has some thought given on grip changes(no choil).
Personally I'd say the calypso jr would be great for quick, down & dirty situations, just because I know the knife. I can do high speed changeovers for 5min without the knife stopping or me giving up any grip. If you're looking for hard use, then the military.

I completely agree with Vampyrewolf; familiarity is very important. What ever folder you choose, play with it, use it, and become very comfortable with it. For me that would be a Delica, Native, or Bob Lum Tanto. I carried a Delica for over 8 years and changed to a Native, which I have carried for 2 years now. I really like the Lum Tanto and am quite comfortable with it even though it is not a common EDC for me. The G-10 scales are a plus and I definately prefer tip-up carry.

No way - I'm not going to say a fixed blade because you ask about a folder!

I guess the knife you have on you would be the best-but if you had your choice...well that seems endless. Like you said it's what "fits", kind of a personal thing. Just try a bunch and pick your winner!

Thumb stud, disc, wave, auto, hole: assist opening knives "just love em'". Which one is faster is kind of a moot point as they are all very fast.

Which knife is best in a knife fight- check out spyderco's catalog under MBC (martial blade craft). You want a strong knife, large/long blade and very strong lock (the lock would be the weakest link). Heck you want to cut the other person , not yourself!!!

If said person has a 2x4, pipe, gun, ect. ect. maybe it's best just to get out of "Dodge" partner. But if this same person has a knife (and there is no way out) and he is that close and ready to do you harm- well than you need to cut him and run!

Maybe the parasite will bleed to death!

Aloha and I agree w/ Vampyrewolf. Familiarity is the key. Also TRAINING from various positions with your folder is VITAL! Just because there's these assisted opening folders around, don't fall into the false sense of security thinking you'll be able to handle a "when it hits the fan moment' just because you have one in your pocket! TRAIN!

I usually carry my Delica, Endura, and on rare occasions my Calypso Jr. Having trained w/ a majority of my folders, whether spyderco or not, I know their strengths and their weaknesses...How? BY TRAINING W/ THEM! I cannot over emphasize the training factor!

Spyderco's have proven to me through TRAINING that they are the easiest knives, depending on the model, to open under a high stress situation. Very easy to INGRAIN into your gross motor skills due to their hole.

One of my fav's for a "when it hits the fan moment" was the Goddard, due to the guard. My others being the Merlin, Rescue's, and of course the Civi.

Whatever you decide to get, you owe it to yourself to train! Be aware of not only quick under stress opening, but familiarize weapon retention as well, or the threat may be using that SOG Flash on YOU! (God Forbid!)

Take care and choose wisely.

I bought Delica after I was on a close protection course. I did not use it, but I think it would be very good if I get into a trouble. Also I got a chinese kubotan, but, after I was in a fight, I realised that chinese kubotans are rubbish. So, I bought Batonlite. What additional weapons I have? Coins in my pocket and belt. I think this is more than enough for protection. Ah, and MOBILE to call to police !!!

All great advice guys, I agree the 1 you practice the most with is the 1 you need to have with you at all times.
When I have time in my schedule I'm slowly learning martial blade work from a very seasoned former Army Ranger.
And while it's not the most aestetecly pleasing looking knife, I've found the waved knives to have no equal in the area of simple response action.
When confronted with a bad situation adrenaline is surging and this type knife just eliminates the question of "do I have my finger on the hole" and will it open.
It will everytime, I'm NOT talking about the traditional waved knives which are good 99% of the time.
What I mean is a or a suitable B/M with a enlarged lip left and the spine lowered, tip up draw into a stab or cut.
I always carry atleast 1 waved on me at all times, RF pocket set on go. Ron

Just like my forespeakers said, being familiar with the knife is very important. For instance, I know that the Gunting is a dedicated MBC / SD knife, but as I don't have one (yet) it's most likely I won't take advantage of its features, though I know of them (theoretically).
I handled the Chinook and I think it would make for a great fighting folder.
OTOH, it's most likely that if the $#it hits the fan I will use the Delica (considering that my EDC is a SE Delica).

Aloha Dialex,

I'm glad that the Delica will be there for you! As you know, I really love the Delica as well.

Besides, I'd rather have my delica seized as evidence than a Chinook or a Gunting! BUT, if I had a "Dialica", That be something else...LOL!

Take care...EVERYONE!

Just wanted to point something out,"bad situation could mean BG wants to pound on you, could mean a lot of situations where an open blade can get you in a world of tbl.My G will handle most situations, closed it's a sweetheart, can also open & escalate if needed! The G gives me more options than ANY other folder!

Since I'm most likely to be carrying a Delica (CF SE), that's what I'm going to go with.

I'm curious what you think of the SOG Flash. Although the assist is neat, it seems like the safety lock is something you could potentially miss if you're trying to get the knife open in a hurry.

For me,I'd want my Cold Steel Vaquaro Grande(13" open!). As we Harley folk say, there's no replacement for displacement. ;-) 'Course,it's a little big for EDC. My Spydie of choice would be my G-10 Police SE.

Just my $.02 on the Flash. I don't like the SOG's assist. The Kershaw Speedsafe system is much safer. When closing, the Kershaw's spring isn't felt until the blade is half closed, whereas the SOG's is felt right away. The smaller Kershaw's also have a flipper choil that makes opening safer.

MOD Tempest hands down. Assisted opening? My Kershaw became a straight up manual opener after about a week, the liner lock is wispy thin too.

Ye I say the Civilian.
I own the Civie, Matriarch and the Chinook.

The Chinook is beutiful, I have a numbered piece, and yes it feels **** good in the hand and would make a good "tactical blade" I'm sure, BUT.
The Civilian looks like it came out some horror movie, and if I was under threat in a nasty situation the following comes to my mind.
The Chinook is a blade that would in a situation would be more for the stabbing use, ofcause you can slash with it, but the Civie specializes in that field.

If I'm under attack I dont want to wait for the guys to come for me so I can take aim and stab, I wanna slash back and forth as much as I can, cut the **** out of him a good few times to really make him sore so I can get out of the situation.

I dont want to kill my attacker unless I have to, with a blade like the Chinook been stabbed into you, that would cause one hellava bigger wound than a few slashed from the Civie.

For self defense when you cant carry a firearm, I say if it has to be a blade, make it the Civie or something with really good reach (mabey a full sized 19 inch Bowie?)

I personally carry my Civie for upclose confrontations and my Glock 21 for distance.

Cheers
