Out of the larger folders Spyderco makes, if the world fell apart and you were doing whatever, which one would you want in your pocket? I'd probably take my native. A military or paramilitary I'm sure would work just as well if not better. How about a Persian? They're very pretty, but everyone talks about how heavy and sturdy they are. What say ya'll?

If you're going to be strict about it only being a Spyderco folder, then I'd chose the Chinook. It's durable enough to last for a very long time and big enough to handle anything you would ask of a knife under the conditions you describe.

Zepplin, I have a Persian, a Chinook II, a few Natives, and a raft of other Spydercos, athough no Military. For your scenario, I'd grab the Chinook II first, but the Persian would be my second choice. Those two knives are built like bank vaults. Thick blades, thick dual liners, and front locks. The Chinook's blade is just a tad longer and a tad thicker than the Persian's and the G10 is both grippier and probably stronger than micarta, athought it would take horrendous abuse to damage either of these knives. The Chinook clip can be set up for LH carry, while the Persian's cannot. Although the Native can also be set up for a lefty, its blade, while just as thick as the Persian, is quite a bit shorter and my Natives are all FRN, and unlined FRN just doesn't instill the same level of confidence I feel with the dual liner knives. IMHO Natives are great for EDC, light and sturdy enough for darn near anything, but for WTSHTFC, I want something even sturdier.

Edited to add: I would be very curious as to how someone who has a Chinook, a Persian and a Military would rate the three.

For those of you that know me, it is needless for me to say that I would choose the Military. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Why? The reason is simple....when Sal designed the Military, he wanted an all around survival knife that could do everything from cutting branches and small trees to skinning game to personal survival. IMO, I believe that he did just that.....

I don't want to take anything away from the Chinook or Persian, but if SWHTF, the Military is the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> that would be in my pocket.

Gotta second KBR on this one...Military all the way. You can really choke up on the blade or hold it further back to snap cut/chop things. Good call KBR. Take Care!!!

If I had a choice, my first choice would be a fixed-blade, not a folder.

If limited to a folder, I'd grab my Native CE.

I personally would prefer a khukri or short sword if the SHTF. My 26" short sword is a machete/khuk cross... and that's in my trunk.

If limited to "city carry", I'd like to get a forged bowie, but for now my Temp would do the job. I'm usually carrying enough on me to begin with.

Good question you pose here.

I myself would prefer a large fixed blade knife, something like the Buck M-9 bayonet. Something you could chop down a tree or hack trough a car with nary a scratch on the blade. Let's face it, your going to do things with it that you normally wouldn't do. It will become a hammer, screwdriver, chisel, crowbar.

But you asked about a spydie folder. Out of all the knives in there catalog I feel that there are two that would fit your catagory:

The A.T.R. or
The Chinook II

WHY?

Because of there thick liners, handles, blade and a very strong lock. Plus they pack a lot of mass...I don't think the Military model would perform as well. The draw back I see is that it is a liner lock. And I beleive one liner to boot.

Anyway this is just my opinion and maybe the "Cricket" would be the "Ticket".

I really wish Spyderco would bring this knife back.

I don't have a Millie so I won't say I'd use that. Until recently my choice would have been a PE Native but something with a bit more heft may be better so choice of what I have is now a PE SS Endura.

Yeah, I've got to agree with Ken on this one. The original post asked for a folder that would withstand a "world fell apart" scenario. No folder would be best for this type of situation, unless it were supplimented by a variety of other tools as well. My answer was based on the idea that the original poster just wanted one knife, and it had to be a Spyderco folder. I would still have to go with the Chinook over the Millie, for all the reasons Ken mentioned. The dual, thick liners, heavy blade and strong lock of the Chinook would make it vastly superior to the Military for a long-term situation, particularly one in which the knife would almost certainly be abused. Nevertheless, a good fixed blade knife would be preferred over ANY folding blade.

I wasn't sugesting carrying a folder only. Given the scenario I proposed, I'd probably have a large fixed blade and a good folder, if not more than one. Thanks for all the input.

I agree with what some of the other people here said: if the world falls apart, you don't want a folder, really not. It _will_ be damaged under those circumstances.

Out of the Spyderco line, I would suggest a Perrin FB04. Another good and even stronger knife is the Fallkniven S1.

I would have to agree with chux. Except mine would be a CE SS Endura. However, I do own I knife that my father gave to me when I was little that I might be more inclined to bring along. It is an early 80's Buck 110 Folding Hunter with finger grooves. The steel on the early 80's Buck Knives seems better than the stuff they offer today. I am able to sharpen that thing to a razors edge.

Hey Jim, I've been carrying our old 110 here lately, a pre 94 model. Like you said the steel really takes an edge off the 204!
