Thanks for sharing!

Now, hopefully, when people ask about when is such-and-such Golden model finally going to be released, and Sal mentions they're expanding their facilities, they'll see that Spyderco really is in the process of a major expansion.

I hope that Spyderco increases sales at least 3-fold and they hire many more here in the USA!

Presumably all this is just to meet the obscure, individual demands of forum members?

I think I have committed to buying probably $10,000 worth of hypothetical knives, if only they could find a way to answer my every beck and call.

Precisely! Each forum member will be assigned their own builder and can special order one unique knife a year. The total cost will be roughly a year's salary plus expenses.

In addition to all the "regular" construction issues on a project of this size. Eric mentioned on a Livestream that as the project got underway that they discovered abandoned and forgotten coal mines underneath the site that had to be assessed and then stabilized/filled in before they could continue.

We're already assigning name tags: "David's maker", "Jim's maker", etc. :winking-tongue

This is so cool. I’m in Denver, visiting Colorado for the first time since 2017, and an SFO pilgrimage is on the books.

Does the expansion mean there will be a Custom Spyderco Shop?

That's what they want you to think. Really, the site was chosen so they could mine the coal and use it to feed the new smelter and foundry that's being built. When the new facility is finished, the dodgy delivery schedules from Crucible and Bohler will just be bad memories.

I don't think this forum goes a full year between requests for custom shop knives, but so far it's never happened. I think there's way too much money to be made in sprints and exclusives. If I could have any combo I want, it would take away all of the uniqueness from limited runs.

Not that there is direct equivalence, but Buck offers sprints, web exclusives, and a custom shop. They all seem to sell well enough for Buck to continue with all three. They did drop SFO exclusives, however. Spyderco chooses not to offer a custom shop for their own reasons which I respect. But, who knows what the future holds?

Eric has discussed the possibility of a custom shop with the Golden Knife-Makers and they seem to like the idea. We'll see what the future holds.

Sussh...we don't want the word to get out that Spyderco is actually owned by dwarven smiths!

Very cool to see pics from the ground. I had imagined a few new pieces of equipment, but this is an absolutely massive expansion!
