My First Spyderco

#1

Post by Erion929 »

After a few years of picking up knives, finally came to the fork in the Spyderco Road. Like Glocks, never found them esthetically pleasing. But, times change and the in same way that I now have Glocks in 19, 26, and 34, I have my first Spyderco….a Manix 2. Due to the stiff cage/spring, the mod bug took hold quickly. The Shaman, Native, and Sage have also caught my eye and I’m even coming around to the PM2/ P3 looks :winking-tongue

Oo wee. That is a good looking knife! You sure picked a good one for a first Spyderco.

Try a lightweight Manix 2 next. I love them. I have three, one each in Spy27, S90V, and BD1.

Nice! Welcome aboard.

The pm2 does indeed have a weird aesthetic at first but once you have one in your hand you will appreciate it so much.

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you’re already eyeing up about 5 news models… you’ll fit right in! :grin-squint

If you like modding your knives, the Paramilitary 2 might have the largest selection of aftermarket parts available at the moment. The Para 3, Native 5, and even Shaman also have a respectable selection of aftermarket parts available.

I was gifted a Tenacious, but the first Spyderco I bought was also a Manix. I'd defs suggest trying something from the Seki factory, especially in K390 (best way to economically try out a "supersteel" imo)... and a Tenacious or something similar so you have a ~$50 knife to beat on.

Welcome aboard. That's pretty heavily modded. Are those replacement scales and liners? The shadow is different and that definitely looks like an extra screw back there by the clip.

Yes, aftermarket scales….Applied Weapons Technology (AWT) anodized aluminum. They delete the internal scale liners and the lanyard tube….replacing the lanyard tube with a rear standoff w/screws.

The scales are “skinnier”, removing some of the OEM G10 scale height….feels great :cheap-sunglasses

The cage is a Flytanium brass cage….also changed to a medium weight spring and a ceramic ball. The difference with the ball is minimal, but the reduced weight spring is HUGELY BETTER for deployment and dropping shut….perfect!

Welcome aboard.

Looks like AWT scales (no liners).

That is one heck of a first knife!

I like those AWT scales. I’m excited to see the LW version drop.

Welcome to the forum, Erion. Enjoy your time here.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.
