On hold until expansion

#1

Post by wrdwrght »

In asking Sal for this new Golden model (or variant) or that CQI’d old one, we often hear him talk of “the expansion” and how it has put some serious brakes on Golden’s production.

Moreover, we, the fanbois, seem not to factor in the cost of this expansion on the new or improved stuff we want that is produced elsewhere in the Spyderco universe. After all, how much can it cost to get rid of lock-rock or to enlarge a clip’s landing pad in an FRN mold?

My recent (and first) visit to SFO several Sundays ago gave me pause. There, behind the red-brick walls that marketing has made familiar to us was “the expansion”.

Wow, talk about money out the door, not in…well, at least until that big risk bears bigger fruit. .

So you can get an idea at least of the scale of “the expansion”, here are two looks at it. Know that the footprint is not quite an American football field (estimated in Google maps at 82x49 yards). Now double that (because two stories). And don’t forget to equip it…. Color me pathetically ignorant of the demand for Spydies, and of why I should be patient.

Thanks for sharing some updates!

Even with how impressive it looks in photos, I believe that photos just don't do it justice! The physical expansion is huge! Their actual production capacity will be greatly improved but I can only imagine how beneficial the expansion will be in regards to the business side of things!

Thank you for the photographs.

I am very happy for Spyderco, Sal, his family, the staff, and wish that I had enough income to buy every knife that they made!

Imagine that, all because of a few little knives.

I was there in November last year and again this spring. It takes a long time to complete a build like that.

Hey wrdwrght,

Thank for sharing!

Looking at google maps… is that new building on Brickyard, or Avery?

That new building is on the Brickyard Rd. side of that block.

Thanks for sharing that. That is a huge outlay in money. It will take Spyderco a little while to recoup the cost. However, this is adding jobs to Americans and putting more knives in our pockets.

I really hope that, among other things, this means we will finally get Crucarta everything.

Looks like a massive expansion. It will give a real boost in production and create a lot of jobs. And knowing what happened with the previous expansion I'm sure that no more than two years after this one is fully operational they will start to think about another expansion. And all that because Sal taught people how to sharpen their knives and drilled a hole in the blade of a folder. 🤣
Jokes aside, all the best to Sal, Eric, their families and the entire Spyderco crew.

Great job. Let’s hope this expansion translates into quality as much as in quantity. I would like to see all Golden made spydies sharpened by robots with even and consistent cutting bevels, among other things.

Fact*:
The entire top floor will hold a library of 3x5 cards with as yet unseen Sal designs. It is expected that it will be 98% full on completion of the building.
