anyway, it seems irrelevant. when eric discussed this knife, he said it was yellow like the native. i'm not sure why the translucent thing keeps coming up. there's no reason to believe it won't be the same as the yellow native salt.

Agreed. That translucent yellow rumor is, I suspect, just fear talking.
I hope you're right Bolster. I can cope with the yellow but translucent would be a bridge too far.

i would just dye it grey and hope for a smoky color or black. i won't not buy this knife.

Me too. I'm not experienced with dying though and don't know how it will go with the translucent material. Either way, I have some dark green (verde oscuro) RIT dye ready to go. I passed on the BHQ M4 LW because I think the Magnacut version will make it obsolete for me. It doesn't worry me that much but I do have corrosion issues with M4 and if Magnacut comes anywhere near it in performance and sharpenability then this LW is going to see a lot of use. This spot was taken by the S110V LW but that one has had a lot of chipping issues so has fallen from favour. My finger keeps hovering over the Mint M4 button and I would already have it if BHQ didn't charge $50USD for shipping to Australia. I hope I don't regret it when it's gone.

i don't have any experience with dyeing knives either, but if this one is translucent yellow, it will absolutely be my first time hitting my handles with rit. honestly, i almost wouldn't even care how it turns out as long as it didn't stay translucent yellow.

i know what you mean with the m4 manix. at that price it's hard to pass up, even if it patinas and has a little corrosion. there are only two reasons i haven't bought it... i'm waiting for the magnacut manix and i want to try a bradley folder 2, which is also m4, and i don't think i'll want multiple blades in that steel.

This is how translucent yellow looks, over PM2 liners. In person it looks either like gold or like honey, depending on the lighting. This material is Ultem, though, not FRCP.

maybe the delay is spyderco figuring out how to shift to ultem for this model and that's why they won't give an update. i kind of hope not. i'm not a fan of the price bump i've seen other ultem knife models receive.

pe magnacut natives are showing up. just a matter of time. hopefully the manix salt will be the star of the next reveal.

spyderco, in case you haven't just been completely ignoring this thread, like it seems, i know plenty of us would still love to see a magnacut g10 manix as well as the m2lw. i'll be buying any of them you release. also, blacked out would be amazing as an option.

Thinking of the news from Amsterdam with that PM2, suggesting there are plans to all/most of the Golden models will get Salt versions, I think it is fairly probable we’ll get both versions.

A suspicion I have is that the coating Eric mentioned he was testing in a video recently may have something to do with coated Salt blades in Golden?
The coated liners, clip, and and hardware were also pretty conspicuous on that MagnaCut PM2.
It would be interesting to coat all of those thing and not also a coated blade.
The coated knife Eric was testing was a PM2…

That’s just my speculation, though.

most salts have coated hardware now and only a couple of salts from seki have coatings. it's a shame because i'd really like some more black salts.

With the popularity of the PM2, it's not unreasonable to think a PM2 salt has been on the drawing board longer than the M2LW salt, even if they have been more open about the development of a M2LW salt. And even if it hasn't, there's nothing really new here as far as technology goes, it's basically a re-wrapping of the Caribbean.

I've never heard of the Tusk before. Or, I guess the name is somewhat familiar, but I've never looked it up. What an interesting design! Not something I'd need, but really cool.
I do however think that the use of titanium makes it less complicated to achieve salt-level corrosion resistance than what will be the case for a CBBL.

While the PM2 salt took me a bit by surprise, I'm not really surprised that it crossed the finishing line before the Manix salt.
With a presumably simpler and shorter development track, and an end product that is guarantied to sell like hot cakes, I can understand their priorities.
I still think a M2LW salt will suit me better, but I'll wait until they're both released and a proper comparison can be made

everyone thought the pm2 salt was coming a long time ago, back when spyderco hinted at a lw version and also said they were thinking about making salts of the golden models. but nothing was said about either of those things for years after that, so i think most of us just dropped it. as far as i know, there was never an instance of sal or anyone else saying they were carrying a pm2 salt like there was with the manix, so it's just a surprise. it's not a surprise that they'd make one though.

the titanium isn't why i brought up the tusk. i bring up the tusk because most people talk about the spring that makes the bbl/cbbl work as being why the manix can't be made into salt, but a spring is used on the tusk's marlin spike. most of us forget that the salt exists and spyderco has already made a salt knife with a similar lock.

i'm really not surprised about a pm2 salt. i'd be more surprised if they never made a pm2 salt. what's surprising, and a little disappointing, is the fact that we were told about the m2lw already being made and existing in use, but instead of seeing one, we see a pm2 we haven't heard about first. i'm sure you're right that the pm2 salt will sell well. even i want one and i don't really care for the pm2. if spyderco made a pm2 salt wharncliffe, i'd absolutely be all over it.

I didn't misunderstand you, I just wasn't very good at expressing myself (it happens quite frequently).
It's great that they have some prior experience using coil spring in salts, that should make the switch more predictable. I say predictable instead of easier, because we don't know what they learned from that experience. Anyhow, what I tried to get at though, is that the cage might introduce some challenges that are less of a concern with a titanium frame, e.g. drainage, galvanic corrosion etc..
Nothing that can't be solved, I'm sure, but with a plastic handled folder you'd want to keep material cost down and streamline the process as much as possible, to hit a price point your customers will be comfortable with. A titanium frame lock leaves a bit more leeway in that regard.

i get that, but it's not like the reveal process is working swimmingly either. we're still waiting for a knife from reveal 5 and a handful more from more recent, but long past reveals as well.

i'm fine being patient. it's not like i ever need another knife. and my comment about being disappointed and surprised is just that. i'm not trying to whine or complain, or even be impatient, but it's a fact that i find it disappointing that there have been no updates. lots of threads like this get updates occasionally, even when the updates aren't necessarily good news. the silence just leaves those of us that are excited about this model to wonder if it's ever going to materialize. and i know spyderco doesn't owe us anything, but telling people about a knife to get them excited and then providing no updates is going to cause a bit of understandable impatience and frustration. the answer to that isn't just blowing people off and saying, "you did that to you." as if we are responsible for the management of their production queue.

if they didn't want people to get excited about the product, they wouldn't be selling it in the first place. they want to create hype. their production queue and timeline has nothing to do with our impatience. what spyderco chooses to show and how fast they produce it is up to their management. i can see them not mentioning new products because of impatient customers, but it's not a reason to not provide updates on projects already announced.

Agree on that. The Native just isn't my knife, so passed also, but it was a painful decision! Now I'm kinda frantic to get Magnacut in one of "my" preferred Spy models...

...Passing on the Native has been difficult. MG2

Agree on that. The Native just isn't my knife, so passed also, but it was a painful decision! Now I'm kinda frantic to get Magnacut in one of "my" preferred Spy models...
I have a couple of Natives and have in the past several so don’t really dislike . I just want to try the Magnacut steel on my favorite platform first and if I like it will move to other models . MG2

the native fits my hand just as well as the manix and i like it as a smaller version of the same style of knife. what i don't love about it is the blade thickness. it's fine for most cutting, but it's thick enough i wouldn't want to be breaking down boxes with it for any length of time. the manix is thick too, but it's a taller blade, so it's thinner behind the edge. still not great for repeated boxes, but better overall and a great edc.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.
