Random: General Spydie Chat
Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
My dad is retiring and plans on taking up a life of kayaking lol. I figure I’ll get him a pac salt 2 pe. Too bad there isn’t a native chief lw salt yet. He would much prefer that.

Well went to a brick and mortar and got home and opened the box and the black coating on the pivot is coming off and looks terrible. Ugh. Luckily he won’t mind.

I’ve never had one and I feel great. The twitching is hardly noticeable anymore

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
Nope. Its QC failure. Here’s a pic. Like the coating didn’t dry before they boxed it or it dripped or bubbled.

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
It's not a functional issue, of course, but that really doesn't look good on a $100+ knife. I wonder if it could have been a return that got resold?
Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
Need to zoom in, but this is 3 months of ownership. Coating is starting to flake off the screws.

Oh, you're 100% right. I've never seen that happen even on pacifics used hard for years.
I thought you were talking about the pivot area of the tang.
I have NIB Pacifics with those lines from opening them twice.

Wow, I would have expected a nitrided like coating, not something like paint or plasticote. I'll trade you mine which looks better, but I don't know if I can get it to you in time. The screw that is, not the whole knife.

Yeah not what I expected either. Would powder coat do that if the surface isn't prepped right?

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
Had mine all of 3 days and it's showing dots on the pivot and lockbar screw, and scratches in the lockbar coating as well, looks like it's going the way of Jeff's.
Not in the same ballpark as SG's gift-salt though, would be cool if Golden could send a pivot out. I try to be easygoing about QC but no one wants to see flaking on a new knife.

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
The lockbar on mine is scratched, but not chipping up. Just the back side of the screw mounts/inserts. Whatever they are called. I would expect scratches. Doesn't bother me. It is a worker, but I would almost just wish it was uncoated.

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
I think I’m going to try removing the rest of the coating so it doesn’t look so rat-chewed before I give him the knife tomorrow. I can’t wait for Golden to expand again so they can make more models/salt versions there. For years Seki knives over $100 haven’t been worth it IMO. Saying that as someone who buys a lot of spydies.

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
I agree, my DLT Cruwear Delica has a lot of wear to the same screws as well. Not quite like SG's example, but more than other knives that I've carried more frequently. There's a few reasons why my collection consists of only 4 Seki knives.

fwiw i've never seen that on my knives and I've been carrying seki folders nearly 20 years.
luck of the draw I guess. Just like I've never seen a zero blade play golden lockback.

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
Interesting. I've been surprised at how durable those coatings are. My Manbug "rescue" resides on my keychain and despite all the abrasion it goes through, the coatings have held up great. Still, great knife to be used making great memories!
Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
I put in a request for a replacement pivot screw for my Ladybug Salt but they responded saying they didn't have any black screws and could only send me a silver one (which I'm fine with). I wonder if that funky screw has something to do with a screw shortage and they had to substitute?
