I have come to LOVE how H1 scratches

#1

Post by Evil D »

It really is like a different type of patina and I can't get enough of it. In some lights the scratches are so fine you can't even see them, and in other lights the blade sparkles and has a sort of patina-stonewash to it.

Totally with you, David! I do love that H1 really shows scratches and use. Much like I love this on the SUS410 cladding steel of HAP40 blades.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Funny, it used to bother me a lot with 420J2 but I'm thinking my tastes have just changed. I really enjoy the looks of a well used blade now.

Yeah, and the cladded tool steel blades give you two looks of "use": Scratches AND patina... :winking-tongue

Not crazy at all. In fact, some of the custom guys are using a Scotchbrite pad to distress the finish of their blades after acid-washing. It really gives it a cool look for sure.

Definitely the easiest steel to scratch I had ever used. That's why when I see them on here not scratched up, I wonder if their ever used. Mine looked like it went through a war after a week of work and then a weekend camping.

I find the camera angle makes a big difference on which scratches show.
This side shows the scratches more than the other.

i was going to say you're nuts, but i really like the way ticn wears and makes a blade look like a user. i hate scratches on a satin blade (one of the reasons i don't prefer satin blades), but others hate them on coated blades. i guess i can't call you crazy, just different from me.

Probably the one thing I wish Spyderco would do that other brands do are stonewashed coatings like Kershaw's blackwash.

i LOVE kershaw's blackwash and stonewashed blades in general. it's the only thing i like about the shaman and i wish spyderco would do it more.

We need a wear thread. Blade scratches, handle scratches, coatings, clips, micarta, titanium, etc.

Even the picture next to my user name is where I put a big scratch through the bug logo on one of my knives.

Other stuff and some more h1.

Bit hard getting a good picture, but I like the way the edge of the opening hole looses it’s edge over time too.

It seems like H1 would be an ideal candidate for rough stonewashing.
