The Mule Thumb Ramp

Hey everyone!

I also really dislike the thumb ramp in use, so I figured I should share what I did to fix one of my Magnacut Mules.

I used my belt grinder, but a drum sander would work well too. I took down the thumb ramp and then lowered the spine to make it look right. It is amazingly more comfortable than before! I intend to lower the thumb ramps for all mules as I put them into service in the future, but it is certainly a nuisance, and grinding on my Mules is a risk that I wish I didn’t have to take.

I apologize, but I‘m not sure what you find shocking. Did you mean “blank,” as in without scales? That would make sense.

Unfortunately, I have many more Mules than I have had opportunity to finish.

May be a trick of the light... On my screen your Mule appears to be black in color. I thought you may have a process to blacken a Mule that you might like to let us in on.

As for the thumb ramp, my opinion is leave the Mule alone. Clearly the Mule platform can be modified to any persons preference, take it away if you like, just do it aftermarket.

Do you mean the octagon handle solution? I don't see any other mule handle photos than that. But yes, making a tang of the mule handle, and then adding a large octagonal handle, would obscure the thumb ramp. I don't think you ever posted a final photo of your project, however.

My only 2 complaints are the ramp and hole. A manix style ramp would be very nice. My thumb slips off when I’m sweaty or field dressing and it’s kind of uncomfortable. The hole has caught sparks from a ferro rod and burned the heck out of my thumb. I don’t cover the hole anymore when I do that haha. It also collects fat and blood when hunting. It would be nice if it was smaller so I could epoxy it easier
