Mule Screws

Post by rooster81 »

Hi Everyone,

Could someone tell me what the size of the screws and barrel are for the halpern scales?

Thanks.

The bolts themselves are 3/16" diameter by 1/2" in length. I don't know screw dimensions, but I measure the head to be 13/64" with a T8 slot. That appears to be a normal screw size, according to the internet. I don't know the threading, but if you're buying replacements I assume you just get matching stuff.

I bought some 3/16" bolts + screws from knifekits recently, and the screws are considerably larger than the ones that come w/ the Halpern scales. I'm making my own handles, so I can countersink to accommodate whatever screws, but if you are buying to replace for halperns, a lot of places don't list the screw head sizes and it can be hard to know if you're getting the size you need.

In this thread, I give screw dimensions that work well for the Mule, and I recall the screws/nut barrels were the same as those I received with the Halperns:

I contacted the company and they said the screw head diameter is 0.0153". That seems small, right?

On the G10 set of scales Spyderco provides the screw head diameter I mesured is 0.206" if that helps.
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

It does, thanks. They added an extra zero, the the screws are apparently 0.153 in diameter, but that still doesn't make sense to me because the barrel is supposed to be 3/16, or 0.1875.

My Halperns are 4-40 , 0.195 head diameter T8 , the other screw is a knife kit , 6-32 , .246 head T10
You can see how I countersunk scale for bigger screw.
The USA knife screw size is a catalog mistake , they use the 2-56 in their smaller pivot barrels , they use 4-40 in their 3/16 barrels.

I have been after 3/16 barrels and matching button head screws in order to try and make screw-in set of scales. I've found a supplier but it's Brisa, in Finland. I don't reckon it will be worth importing in the USA.
USA Knife Maker seems to have stuff that fits perfectly with no hassle !

They have many 3/16 barrels, the ones with 6-64 threads will fit these screws : Screw 6-64 Button Head SS .20" Thread Length Torx T10 - 10 pack

Thanks again everyone! I ended up ordering the barrels and screws from USA knife maker, see the links below. The screw heads are slightly bigger than the holes in the halpern scales and stick out a bit but everything fits fine so no big deal. They were the only place I found that wasn't sold out of barrels and screws.
