Really had to think long about this one and decided to pass. I don't have the extra $ with the holidays coming up. M398 does sound interesting on paper so hope to try it in a folder one day. Pretty wild it's still in stock!

I was asleep at the wheel and almost missed this. Just placed my order for 2. Normally I would be "surely out of luck", but for some reason these are still available. Makes me happy, but I hope Spyderco isn't sitting on a bunch of unsold inventory.

3 days later and still available. That's something new and different, compared to recent history. I guess Spyderco got tired of all the whining by those who didn't get one (sometimes that group included me!), and decided to make enough to go around...and then some.

Easy for me to get one. One more whiner cured, at least until the next release.

Thanks! Me too. I have a few weeks to finish up a project I am working on, then I really do intend to get this bandsaw I have working and get busy teaching myself to put decent handles on these mules. I know I have been saying that for some time, but unless something else raises its ugly head, that is the plan. I suppose I don't really need the bandsaw, strictly speaking, but it is one of those things that I'm going to "get done or else".

Don't forget to share you work, I know you'll turn out a master piece! I really need to invest in a better bandsaw than what I have, can't cut a straight line to save my life🤦‍♂️

Still available. New folks can still get one, and anyone that was traveling or away for a few days.

I am shocked that these are still available. This is a steel with edge holding comparable to, or perhaps better than s110v (based on Larin's tests).

Mine takes a sharp and aggressive edge. The steel will take a fine edge if you really work at it, but I don't think that's its forte. It feels a little like zdp189 on the stones, but wear resistance is higher.

Speaking of zdp - I just picked up a new, factory second ZDP mule from the flash sale. I can't believe it. I have been kicking myself for not getting one since 2010 and there one was on the website for $59. Couldn't believe it.

I look forward to testing these side by side. I think m398 has some properties in common with ZDP.

I'm glad they are still available. the goal is to get one to everyone that wants one so they can be used and tested. I don't like for our ELU's to have to rush and stress over getting a Mule. That's not the intention of the project.

I'm glad too because I couldn't buy one when it dropped. I hope they'll stay available until the next one comes (one can dream).

Beause 40 USD in shipping and around the same in tax and customs everytime is starting to take its toll on my Mule budget :')
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Robin. Finally made an IG : ramo_knives

I'm glad these are still around as well! I'm still hoping to get one, but I have a few things that are in front of it before I can grab one. If I cant that is ok too.

I am curious about these, but won't be able to afford one for a while either. I'm also kind of questioning if M398 is really the steel I want in a fixed blade after reading Larrin's tests on it. It's apparently one of the least tough he's tested, and the edge retention is kind of on par with other steels with better toughness. The biggest advantage seems to be corrosion resistance, and that's not much of a factor where I live and with the tasks I tend to do, so I'm kind of fine waiting to see if there's other people who want one more than I do. But if they're around for a while I'm definitely going to grab one.

Any word yet how they perform?
Any brittleness you observed?
I did not touch mine yet, just ordered some micarta to play with.

I have been using mine for fruit prep since I received it on 28 Nov.
It is still wearing factory edge, and it is still very bitey.
No corrosions spotted, even under the micarta scales
