Does anyone know what REX stands for in the names of Crucible "High Speed Steels For Cutting Tools"?

I assume it's an acronym for something. REX is only used in the names of Crucible high speed tool steels. I suppose REX could just mean king, but that'd be kind of uninspiring.
You know what, I've just searched for 30min after reading your post and found nothing on the name ! But I've read a ton of older thread about REXsteels, mainly here (since I already have read Larrin's articles :nerd ).
There was a lot to read about Cobalt. Here's a link of a thread Doc Dan started about REX121 : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=68699
It's not related to your question but bluntcut did provide a lot of information on the REX steels.

Thanks for the link Ramonade. I also searched for an hour or so trying to figure out the answer to my own question before I asked it on the forum, but came up empty. Since this thread was REX heavy, I hoped somebody here might know. :cheap-sunglasses

Also have been looking for what REX means, Crucible has some other steels referred to as REX in their documentation, including CPM M2 and CPM M4.

I think REX was in use long before REX tool steels started getting used for knives.

I have some lathe tool blanks labeled Rex AA and Rex AAA and Rex MM that are pretty old - like historical artifacts.

So you might have to go back a ways and do some digging. Seems like a good marketing name to me.

I'm pretty excited for the M398, and might pick up a Rex T15 blade as well. I was previously interested in Rex 76 because the composition looked similar to Z-Max, which is pretty great. The Knife Steel Nerds test article on the Rex steels showed 76 being far closer to Rex 45 than Z-Max though.

Also, we knew it was in the works, but I'm glad to see the production kit mule be introduced, and keeping the same handle geometry to leverage existing aftermarket was a good call.

I'm thinking the T15. Then I can call it the T-Rex.

I looked into it for a while and found nothing on the Rex name. The patent in 1904 that covered what eventually became RexAA was filled by John Alexander Mathews. Maybe it was a nickname? We'll probably never know.

Rex branding from Crucible started with high speed steel and has always been used as high speed steel branding ever since. https://trademarks.justia.com/700/41/rex-70041265.html

Even Crucible M4 is branded as Rex M4 or CPM Rex M4.

If I'm reading right, that trademark seems to date all the way back to 1903. Rex is latin for King, they probably thought that was pretty slick marketing at the turn of the century!

I dunno..."REX" meaning King is not so different from "Magna" meaning "great/mighty/much"...I take it as yet another latin superlative used in the marketing business...does it need more justification than that?

They already dropped last week, did you miss it?

All kidding aside no idea. Just keep checking this forum every week and you should find out about the sale. Generally they drop once every three months. I would guess we could see one of them on sale in August.

Can't wait to grab some of these! My brother in law is a spyderco fan with some machining experience. I think a mule as a kit knife would be a nice present. Really, I'd love a second run of Magnacut (and possibly getting one this time), but I realize that that doesn't really fit the purpose of spyderco's mule team project.
