204P MULE ?

#1

Post by Mulemaster »

Hi, I have a 204P mule, I brought from a guy who had 2, the story goes is…..they scrapped the 204P run because of heat treat problems, but a hand full made it out the foundry!
The one I have hasn’t even been sharpened and has a notch, a big one at that…
So is this true or do I have a fake 😅
Thanks wayne

Sorry I’m new here, can’t see how to add pics

As far as I know, they dropped the plan for a 204P Mule because the steel went into production knives, including but not limited to Spyderco knives, before the Mule run was made. I suppose if any did get completed, they could have been sold as factory seconds at the annual Sale, but I certainly didn't see any there.

If it was not sharpened then I don’t think they would sell it that way but maybe.

That notch is WAY bigger than any seconds mark I've ever seen. Unless Sal chimes in with another explanation, I'd say someone swiped it out of the dumpster.

I'd definitely hold onto it. It's an interesting collector piece if nothing else. Personally, I'd be interested to test it against another mule in the same steel family and see if it has major issues.

The scale pin holes look a little rough, like they have a notch in the side of them. Very cool piece no matter how you slice it.

Sal has a reply about 3/4 of the way down the first page.

The K390 Mule has the same notch in the pin holes ^^

The original MT-14 was scheduled to be CTS 204P. It was the first batch that Carpenter made. We made 127 Mule Teams and then realized that something was wrong as we could break them with our hands.
Yikes. That would make me nervous about even using it.

Interesting story. Good for the display cabinet if naught else. Thanks for posting about this rare mule!

It would make me nervous about looking at it too hard.

Given that it sounds unusable due to the HT or other production issues, I'd be interested in it for use as a blank to make scales. Let me know if interested in this option.

Cheers,

I thought the pins holes looked like that on the older mules. I think Spyderco has since updated it so the laser cutter starts in the piece to be cut out but they did have a hiccup with the MT32.
