Now that Magnacut has made its appearance , what steel do you think is inline for the next release in a Mule ? MG2

I can’t imagine what I would want after the MagnaCut release. Even though I’m unlikely to buy, I am very curious what will be released.

Elastic ceramic might get me to jump, however.

Somewhere I read that Larrin had tuned MagnaCut to be a "middle" balanced steel, with implications that the formula could be tweaked toward more edge retention or more toughness. So maybe we will be seeing a MagnaEdge and a MagnaTough soon? I can imagine MagnaEdge being popular for smallish folders and for Mules. MagnaTough for big fixies and choppers? Exciting time to be a steel nut, for sure.

Regards the question, I'd guess some variety of Vanax?

Magnacut sure is a tough act to follow.

In that case, maybe something silly like 1095. Just acknowledge it’s tough to follow and have an ironic pick.

More magnacut would be nice for those of us who couldn't make it through the server issues. Of course I'd take any version of the afore mentioned tweaked formulas for increased toughness.

Maybe it won't be "steel" at all. :thinking

In terms of steel, I'd like to see a Mule in Bohler S390 or CPM-10V/15V.

Elastic Ceramic would also be neat.

I'm voting for 1095. It would be interesting as a mule just to have a basic carbon steel that is renowned for being easy to sharpen as a reference mule. No telling if it would sell or if people would turn up their noses.

The PMA11 mule is pretty much 10V as I understand it. It is an all time favorite with me. The steel that never needs to be sharpened!! I would be pleased to see a 10V mule

Ohhh, didn't know about 9V. The knife world is so full of Vs, we never stop learning about them !

The only fly in the ointment is the lower HRC. I am not a steel Dr, but I am looking at the numbers and I am super curious about this steel. Perhaps Saint Thomas Larrin, the patron saint of steel can chime in and give us a revelation on this steel. Maybe BBB can use his heat treat alchemy to turn this into a golden high toughness, high edge retention knife steel.

This chart confuses me (I'm easily confused by charts that don't label the axes.) D2 has relatively higher toughness than wear resistance? Say what? I thought the other way around, that D2 had decent WR at the expense of toughness.

It probably has to do with the larger difference between the highest and lowest wear resistance compared to toughness. 10v would be off the charts. I believe Larrin ran into a similar situation with Maxamet, 15v, and Rex 121 on his steel rankings.

I think a lot of these graphs are not entirely accurate. There are a plethora of qualities that make an ideal knife steel that can’t easily be quantified and put on paper. The graph makes 9V look amazing but the hardness is the achilles heel apparently. I wonder if it is just as simple as adding a bit more carbon to get the HRC closer to 58 which is acceptable.

I read the chart as D2 having the lowest toughness compared to the other steels shown (barely).

The "units" for each quality are different.
