Yes, this will be my first Mule if it all comes together. I plan on hitting the checkout button like I caught it stealing from its grandma but who knows

I feel good about this one. As per the Magnacut Pole there are only 470 pieces "spoken for." If this run produces 1500 as suggested, then there are 1030 pieces up for grabs. That's lots! I totally get why 470 of 500 would disappear in 6 minutes. But this time it is going to be different. 500 for polestars, 500 for newly interested Spyderfans, and 500 for flippers and bots. For this drop, my prediction is the Magnacut Mule will be available for at least 15 minutes, maybe more. That's lots of time to load, pick, click and check out. Maybe even enough time to deal with unfortunate digestive issues too.

That poll is going to vastly underestimate the number of people coming out of the woodwork to get their hands on Magnacut. You're missing all of the people that don't visit the mule team section, all of the people that don't post on the forums, and all of the people looking to make a quick buck flipping them for more than double price.

where did these ratings come from? i'm curious because some of them don't seem to reflect my experience. also, i'm surprised to see the magnacut edge retention lower than that of s30v. i thought is was supposed to be higher?

If that's the case, what is everyone drooling over this steel for?? Because of how stainless it is? That edge retention is shockingly low, considering the hype of this steel, being comparable to " plain old, boring, I don't like it, I'll never buy a knife in..S30V" Yet I've seen MANY of those same people going nuts over this steel. I highly doubt 95% of the community need that kind of toughness either. Wow... disappointing. That chart just saved me $75.

i'm a little surprised myself, but i'm still stoked. it's got the toughness of tool steels, corrosion resistance close to lc200n, and edge retention similar to s30v and xhp. sounds like a great balance for an outdoor fixed blade to me (and for edc folders later). like i said, i'm happy with s30v. actually, i'm happy with lc200n and wished i could've snagged an lc200n mule, so i'm pretty excited to get a chance at this one.

M390/20CV/204P still rules for me for small and slim EDC folders where corrosion resistance and edge retention rule. I’m more excited about Vanax SuperClean than CPM MagnaCut.

the only reason i haven't gone after m390 and the like is because i've heard they are more chippy (less tough) and harder to sharpen (higher wear resistance/edge retention). i don't want to buy more sharpeners when i can easily touch up s30v and rarely need to.

M390/20CV are perfectly fine for small folders where you want low maintenance and don’t need it for more than urban EDC tasks. Having so many choices in steels is a very good thing because you can fine tune the need to your tasks.

this is truly devils advocating here, bc like ramzar I find myself attracted to VanaxSC on one side, and CPM Cru Wear on the other, but the argument for toughness here is that this property is under-appreciated in terms of its physical consequences. it's not just something you want in choppers that are on their way to being axes, though you certainly do want it there. what i've read is that it can do more than keep a knife from chipping, though for that reason alone i prefer higher toughness to edge retention any day.

toughness plays a big role, as i understand it, in the kinds of edges you can create, hold, and really use, so in other words, in the real, practical, ordinary useability and effectiveness of a knife edge. toughness can play an important role, or serve as an important variable in *effective* (vs. experimental) edge retention in a similar way that edge angle does, vs. the focus on pure elemental composition that charts and quanta tend to emphasize over and above the real, everyday use of a thing that you've shaped to your needs and desires in terms of edge angle etc. so by increasing toughness without sacrificing the other two qualities, this steel can offer something really superior to, say, S35V, despite nominally having the same edge retention-ish

Same here.

But the price of Vanax was sky high even before the insane pandemic price increases.

If Sal does decide to go to VanaxSC Mule, I expect the price to be 100-150 at least.

Because edge holding alone is not the be all and end all of knife steels. MC should* out perform or equal 4V in all categories and remain highly stainless.

Its the edge stability, the sharpenability, deformation and chipping resistance with the added bonus of being highly corrosion resistant without the detriments other stainless steels have for being stainless.

In real world use this can translate to more perceived edge holding, than what the wear resistance of the steel is since the dulling mechanism for everyone can be different.

BBB - can you save the wisdom for after I get my 2?

I mean, feel free to educate, but everyone saying the "low" edge retention saved them $75 is music to my ears.

I want the LC200N mule (still mad I did not get one yet) to make a lightweight, impervious outdoor knife. I also am working on a heavy duty camp knife design that can take on an apocalypse and last a millennia. LC200N is amazing for toughness and imperviousness to the elements. Compared to LC200N, MC trades some toughness and some stain resistance for extra edge holding. MC is an ideal EDC steel imho.
